Looks good, I can read it with no difficulty and I am on a 1024 x 768 screen

I will probably try a couple of other tests soon to ‘push the envelope’ and see how other screen captures display.

Jezza, you are correct in your assessment. As you noted there are limitations using this procedure. It is rather simple to do though and for some uses it will suffice. For example if someone just wants to show the settings used when trying to describe a problem the color detail of the switches may not be important. The size of the file using the .GIF format is smaller than some other formats and hence is probably more acceptable on this forum.
Thanks to the other respondents for showing the comparative features of the various options. There is no doubt that more detail and finer definition can be obtained and may be desirable for some applications.

I totally agree with you, it does a job and the job is good. The other Loungers were having a little leg pull with each other, which usually happens in the test area!!!!. For the purposes of the Lounge your method is more than satisfactory as it relays the message well.

There are a few of us who use different software packages, mostly free that have been discussed at length in the past. Leif and I tend to do graphical stuff alot and I know Skitterbug really rates Irfanview…we will never agree which is the best

Seriously,I still think mine has a slightly better quality/focus to it but what do you expect when mine cost lots and lots of (company) money when you can still get a very good set of graphics with freeware

This is done entirely with freeware/programs that come with Windows. Quality seems pretty good to me. And it has been translated into Dutch too!

Maybe I should change my language setting to Dutch. I like the idea of “Opties” instead of “Options” (and “Dempen” is a great word, too!). However I’ve just looked up the Dutch for “Tools” and, to my disappointment, it wasn’t “Toolies” so maybe I should stick with English.

Hey, that’s a great program! I used to use PrintKey 2000 (and earlier versions), and installed it on most of my customer’s machines. I never a complaint about it, the program never crashed, even on Windows 95B, and it was easy to use. Very highly recommended for those who don’t want to bother with editing software to make and crop screenshots.
Oh, this was done in Photoshop…

Just as a footnote, you usually can tell from looking at a screen shot what format was used to save it. Here’s a cheat sheet. These were made with Windows XP’s Paint accessory. Note that with a more sophisticated program, you can get much better color dithering in your GIF images, but PNG still is easier and generally more accurate (assuming you use a high color/true color display setting).

Help me out here Jefferson as I am using an LCD screen that is not very clear. What does JPEG Compression Artefacts mean? I looked it up in wikipedia and was none the wiser. How would I recognise this?

Perhaps this example is slightly clearer. The upper part was saved as .png, the lower part as (high compression/low quality) .jpg. If you look closely at the .jpg part, you’ll see some “fuzziness” around the letters.

JPEG compression discards some colors to save on space. This works well with photos where the changes are small from one pixel to the next; it can be almost unnoticeable to shrink a file from 3,000 to 300 kilobytes. On the other hand, when there are large areas of “flat” color, JPEG tends to create little deviations for no good reason. These are generally called “artifacts” of the compression process.

In the above example, you’ll notice speckling around the text. Not right next to it, but in the vicinity. I’m sure if this were easy to fix, someone would have fixed it by now, but even in Photoshop if you try to compress significantly, its JPEG filter will do this. At the level of “maximum” quality (10 or above), the image looks great, but the output file is 4x larger than a PNG. As you apply more compression to reduce the file size, the image deteriorates significantly, until at “low” quality (4 or below) detail starts blurring out. (Here’s a sample, sorry for the large file size.)

These artifacts are irreversible, so even if you plan to use JPEG for compatibility or some other reason, it is useful to save a PNG first as a “master” image from which other formats can be derived.
