I have Vista64 and an HP OfficeJet 1170. This has happened four times now. I install the printer, and I’ve tried various methods. It works fine for a time (1 week to 3 months) and then just disappears. One day it’s not there in the printers folder. I had no problems after the original install for about 8 months, then this started happening. Any ideas?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

1.) Is Vista up-to-date with service pack and patches?
2.) Do you have the latest drivers installed for the printer?
3.) Is the printer USB or network or wireless?
4.) Is it is USB or networked can you try a different calbe?Joe

2.) Do you have the latest drivers installed for the printer? YEP.
3.) Is the printer USB or network or wireless? Network
4.) Is it is USB or networked can you try a different calbe? It’s connected to everyone else. It is also discoverable by the HP driver installer program. So reinstalling fixes the problem each time.Joe

AskWoody LoungerJune 16, 2009 at 8:31 pm #1165121How is it connected to the network – ethernet or wireless?
Ethernet cable. It has been changed over the months too. The difficulty in figuring this out is I now have to reinstall the HP software. It will work for a while. The printer will show up in the printers folder. Then one day. In a few weeks or months, it’ll be gone…

Seems as though the network connection is being lost or the printer IP address is changing.
How is the IP addressed assigned to the printer? Is it a static address?

AskWoody LoungerJune 16, 2009 at 10:30 pm #1165127Actually that has happened before when the printer gets a different IP (it is assigned by the router. I’ve been meaning to make it static for a long time..), however in that case the printer still shows up in the printers folder and all I have to do is give the port the new IP address…
This time it seems like the printer driver was never installed.

See if Vista lost network printer after rebooting or HP printer gets lost help.
BTW, what drivers are you using? HP does not supply Vista drivers for the 1170 series.

AskWoody LoungerJune 18, 2009 at 10:39 am #1165359I’ve been using the standard HP install (HUGE) from their site. There are now two updates there. I’ve uninstalled, reinstalled and added the patches. The printer is working again, however that’s not unusual. Hopefully it’ll ‘stick’ this time!
Thanks,
Bryan

Can you supply a link to the HP download?
Unless the driver is specifically qualified for Vista the driver may be the problem. Microsoft made big changes in the networking stack for Vista. So, any driver that deals with a networked device had to be substantially modified.

When I go there and look for an Officejet 1170 I get a choice of 6 different printers none of which has a Vista driver.

AskWoody MVPJune 18, 2009 at 7:19 pm #1165428Sorry! That’s my old printer. This one is a 7410…
No problem. Did you install according to Installing the Product Software in Windows Vista for a Wired (Ethernet) Network Connection? Have you also seen When I Try Printing, My Printer Is Not Available in the List of Printers?

AskWoody LoungerJune 18, 2009 at 7:31 pm #1165429I don’t see anything in that document other than just install the software… Am I missing something? Also… did you notice above that I installed it and the two critical updates and it’s now working? I just have to wait and see if it sticks.
Thanks.

Yes, I saw that you’ve got it installed now. I just was checking to make sure you followed the steps in the order stated.
Just keep in mind the second link if it disappears again.

AskWoody_MVPJune 16, 2009 at 9:40 pm #1165125Is it a stand alone networked printer connected to a router or a shared printer connected to a computer?
We have fond that at times Vista will lose connection to a shared printer across the network. What we have found, reboot the machine that has lost the connection, and all of those print jobs will start printing out.

AskWoody LoungerJune 16, 2009 at 10:32 pm #1165128Thanks, but there is no printer to print to… no print jobs can even begin. Rebooting doesn’t help.
