I am having a problem opening this file on Microsoft Word. It says it can’t be opened because there are problems with its contents but I have no idea how to fix them. Any help on this would be appreciated!

I got the same message but I have a program, QuickView Plus, that can open lots of files so I did, selected and copied the text, pasted it into LibreOffice Writer, saved as test.docx then could open it in Word 2010. Try it.

I had exactly the same experiences also. However I found it actually opened up fairly well in WORDPAD, rather than the full-blown Office Word. I got some more formatting and pictures out of it that way, but I am suspicious that still some parts might be missing?

I have a suspicion that the file might have been done in Open Office, or one of the two spin-offs of it. Unfortunately I do not have these installed on this computer to test – Can someone else try opening the documents in OO or one of the branches of it please?

Why am I finding it troubling that Word seems less flexible than Wordpad? I had not expected there to be any difference between them, or for Word to be better at salvaging damaged files (or at least more compatible). however it seems to be doing more error-checking of the file prior to loading it, and that is where it falls down.

I have OpenOffice and LibreOffice along with Microsoft Office 2007 [Vista], 2010 [Win7] and 2013 [Win8.1] and haven’t had a problem saving files from OO and LO as .doc or .docx format. It’s possible Word is having difficulties with a macro in the document, Wordpad doesn’t have as much ‘power’ as Word.
