I am having trouble with my wife’s outlook mail navigation pane. Two issues, main one first, second one after.
She has an hp with Win 7 with office 2010. Her email is yahoo.com but I have it set up in Outlook. I do not use Exchange.

Because she has an I-phone and I-Pad and wanted the emails to sync, I switched it to IMAP. Well, actually it was more a matter of having the emails she deletes; disappear from all three devices, not having to do it three times. This was due to the Apple people telling us, in order to do that, we needed to use IMAP rather than POP3.

I tried moving the IMAP one up, but it would not displace the POP3 one. After I added the IMAP account, I copied her emails, or the ones she still wanted into it. Although, the IMAP account is the default one; the POP3 is listed above it in the mail navigation pane. And the ‘sent’ folder will not move to IMAP one. In spite of the IMAP being the default account, the POP3 one.

So I did. Because I did not want to lose all her emails, contacts etc. I did not delete the POP3 account in Outlook. . Anyway, the ‘Sent’ folder was only in the POP3 account. I tried to move it to the IMAP one, when I was moving emails etc. but the Sent folder would not move. Today, I added a new ‘sent’ folder to the IMAP one.

I also tried to get in the File/Account settings/account settings to change things. That was a while ago, so I don’t remember what all I did. Today, since she has all her emails, I went into the File/Account settings/account settings, in order to delete the POP3 account. I did delete it so it is no longer in the File/Account settings/account settings.

However, it is still in the navigation Pane. She gets annoyed by the fact that they share same name, so I ran across directions for changing name of accounts, but this was after I had remove it, so I can’t change to name.

I have searched for ways to change/ adjust things in the mail navigation pane. I have tried to reset navigationpane [at Start-> Run; “C:Program FilesOffice 11Outlook.exe” /resetnavpane] but it would not open.
I tied looking into the navigation pane setting, but they were in C:/Documents and Settings which I could not get to open.

The second issue is, when I open the IMAP one, I get the following message.
    “ failed to update header”
    Details are
    Account: heremail@yahoo.com(IMAP)
    An IMAP command failed
    Protocol: IMAP
    Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com
    Port: 993

    Any idea with these?
    Thanks.

In the navigation pane right click on the POP account name. You should be able to select Close.

IMAP – there are many references to this but nothing definitive about how to fix it. Running Scanpst has helped some. Recreating the email account has helped others.

        Thank you.
Unfortunately for the POP3, ‘close’ is grayed out.
Re: recreating IMAP, do you mean, just using “File/Account settings/account settings” in Outlook?

I will try Scanpst and see what happens.

There is no shortcut for it. You will have to navigate all the way to C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice14 folder and search for SCANPST.EXE file.

sorry for delay in responding. I ran scanpst.exe
      No change.
I was thinking about un-installing Outlook and re-installing it, in order to set up email again. But 2 issues. 1. how to do that with outlook, not entire Office suite? can that be done? At fist I thought I could just go to ‘program and features’ to add/remove features, but that is nly for Windows, not Office/Outlook
2.If I un-install, I guess I would not want to save any of my settings,a s that would likely save the trouble spots, correct?
      Is that my only choice?

        1. You can do a Custom install and choose only part/s of the Office suite. Look in Control Panel, Programs and Features for Office then you may have a choice of Change/Repair, unselect those you won’t need. Or insert the CD/DVD and make choices.

        2. Right, problems in settings/customization can cause issues, can’t hurt to try.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

Thanks. I will try this over the weekend.

Instead of Closing the folder for the POP3 account, you can remove it from Account Settings

Click File and choose Account Settings
      Choose Account Settings again
Select the POP3 account and click Remove

You can also remove the POP3 account without opening Outlook.

Go to Control Panel and open the Mail applet.
      Click Email Accounts
Select the POP3 account and click Remove

I’d recommend you add a new Outlook profile with just the Yahoo account and then if it works. Go back into the original profile and export the sent folder to a PST. Add the exported PST to the new profile as a data file and then you could drag them into the Yahoo sent folder.

Start by going to the Mail Control Panel, click on Show Profiles and add a new profile with a different name and check the box to prompt for profile to be used.
If the Outlook navigation pane and Yahoo are working fine, then exit Outlook and log into the original profile.
click on File, open and export, import/export. select export to a file, choose PST, pick the Sent folder and follow the prompts.
let me know if you need help connecting the PST.
      Regards

DMCCUE, thank you. As I said to Chris, over the weekend I will try your suggestions, too.
I will let you know if I have issues with the PST.
        Again, thanks.

Chris, thank you for the thought and the ways to get to the POP3, but as I said in 5h paragraph of 1st post; I did that and it was deleted there, but it is still in navigation pane [ or should I say ‘pain’]

      • #1523059

Sorry! I missed that you already tried that. dmccue provided the next step after deleting the account information – deleting the profile. If that doesn’t work, then reinstallation might help.

Hi, As I often do, I tried this on my machine first. That can save hurt feelings. So I set up new profile, after exporting the PST.
On my machine it worked fine.
I exported her PST. no problem.
However, when I set up her yahoo, I can not get Outlook to send email.
So, I decided to go back to original profile , until I could get more time. NOW, when I go to Control panel, it will not open. In control panel, the other icons will open, but not Mail. I tried both Left clicking and and right clicking the left click n Open.
      No luck.

Well, I found a way at this site to get the old profile back without opening ‘mail’ in control panel.
I am waiting on Comcast tech support. We will see how they do.

Well, I spoke to a Comcast tech. She told me Comcast does NOT support IMAP. I read her the information from Comcast’s web site with directions for doing it, dated Feb. 2015.
She said, ‘yes, they had, but were having troubles with their servers, so they stopped.
She, of course, had not answer about Comcast did not notify it’s customers who use IMAP.
Thank you for all your help.
