Program to check for dead links in Firefox?

Running Windows 8, 64bit. Firefox 22.

I have a boatload of bookmarks, over 2500. Short of opening each and every bookmark, is there a program or plugin for Firefox that will do it for me? I downloaded AM-Deadlink but it stalls. It gets up to about the 900 mark and craps out. I installed the Bookmark Checker plugin. It does nothing. AM-Deadlink within the results I’m able to get, shows several dead links. Bookmark Checker shows all links as good.

I used a program several years ago (on Win XP) and it worked great. Don’t recall the name of the program. Besides, I’ve lost the program either do to a reformat or a lost CD in 3 different moves.

Preferably I’d like a freeware program. If it’s shareware, not costing an arm and leg.

That’s the 1 I tried. It showed all links as good. I know that’s wrong because on my own I found several dead links that it said were good.

Yes. It gets upwards to 900 then craps out. I guess it has a problem trying to check 2600+ links. Been Googling like mad, no help. Found a link for LinkChecker (pulled off Mozilla’s site) and tried to install that. Firefox comes up with “Not a valid container”. So that no longer works.

Of the links that AM-Deadlink does get, I’m guessing that there’s at least 100 dead ones. Without an option to delete, it will take hours upon hours going through my bookmarks deleting one by one.

In AM Deadlink, after the scan, click on bookmarks and select sort bookmarks with errors at the top of the list. Then click on the first error bookmark, scroll down to the last error bookmark and Shift click on it to highlight all the error bookmarks. Then you can delete them all with one click on the x icon at the far right on the top. If AM deadlink craps out, try unchecking “use internal browser” in the options menu.

AM-Deadlinks specifically says that it can not delete bookmarks in Firefox.

Export to a html and then use Xenu?

(A lot of manual labor I know).

I initially tried AM Deadlink with IE favorites when I posted my answer. When I selected Firefox I got a message saying AM Deadlink could not delete bookmarks. Thank you for the correction.

It’s a free, standalone, program, and I put a Desktop shortcut to run it.

It can only check URL’s for deadlinks, but cannot edit or delete URL’s within the program,
but I’ve never found this to be a limitation.

What an effing mess!!!!!!!!!!!!

I exported my favorites from Firefox to an html file. Then imported those into IE. Then run AM-Deadlinks on IE. Got rid of the rot. Then… deleted all my bookmarks in Firefox. Then imported the clean bookmarks back into Firefox. That created a mess. Bookmarks splattered everywhere.

Now comes the process of moving bookmarks where they need to go. Oh well, at least the dead bookmarks are gone (about 700).

For years I’ve used Linkman Pro as my bookmark manager. It works with all the major browsers (I use it with Firefox, Opera, and IE). That way, I can use whatever browser I want without worrying about whether my bookmarks are in that browser. Anyway, Linkman Pro has a URL checker that I’ve found to work pretty well. In the past, I had tried LinkChecker and Xenu, among others, but I found I prefer Linkman Pro’s checker. I’d use Linkman Pro even if it didn’t have the link checker, since it manages my several thousand bookmarks superbly, but I thought I’d mention it here because of its URL checker.

Andy Halford stopped supporting the Firefox add-on CheckPlaces, but it still works. I saved v2.6.2 in my SkyDrive account:

No need to sign-in to get it.

The .RDF is set for FF v13, but it should install fine in the newer Firefox versions… I haven’t had to modify the min/max version info in an RDF file for a long time, but it’s easy to do – add .ZIP after the .XPI, open the zip, open the install.rdf in a text editor, change the max version under Firefox, save, put it back in the .ZIP, delete .ZIP from the file name.
