I have had a Hotmail.com address for several years. When hotmail was taken over/merged by Outlook.com I created an Outlook.com email address but never used it. While ago, after closing a yahoo account due to uncontrolled spam, I started using the outlook address. Problem is email using the outlook.com address is copied in the hotmail.com inbox. I have tried using settings to fix, but cannot seem to get away from the duplication. Have had no luck on MS site trying to learn the interaction between those accounts and hoping someone here may be able to shed some light? Thanks.

I have both an Outlook.com account and a Hotmail.com account but used a slightly different name for the E-Mail address and a different password from each other. I think that eventually Hotmail will go away leaving only Outlook.com.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

Thanks for the reply. I also used a different name for each so it seems strange they are tied so closely together. On mine, Outlook.com is shown as a sub-folder of Hotmail. You would think it would be just the opposite.

It reads as though you created the Outlook.com email address as an alias within the Hotmail.com account rather than registering a new Outlook.com address. That would explain the duplication.

If you’ve created the alias, then you can only receive through the alias, if you send through the alias, then it’ll be sent through the other “primary” address
and you’ll get copies through both. (at least I think that’s the way it happens) Go back in to the settings and see if you can reconfigure them.

Yeah, I think you guys found the problem. I’ll see if I can separate the two, or something.

      Thanks much!

There are also Connected Accounts which can be added or removed at Settings, Options, Mail, Accounts, Connected Accounts:

Connect email accounts in Outlook on the web
