If this thread is not to include any negative or positive reports about today’s patches for 7/8.1/1607/1703/1709/1803/1809 then perhaps that could be made more obvious, or alternative threads started for those versions.

Otherwise it’s completely self-defeating when you and Woody are advising all consumers and businesses not to install any updates, and Woody is waiting for “in-the-trenches reports”.

I would have expected you to appreciate those who are willing to bite the bullet and provide feedback for everyone’s benefit.

Got a response back from poster apsolutiNN, who describes the same problem. He was running Win10 1903 with the August cumulative update, build 18362.295. He apparently installed KB4524147, skipping the three September cumulative updates, and today’s patch froze his Start button. Rolling back KB4524147 brought the Start button back to life

I rolled back the KB4517211…

I see eight (8) references to v1903 and none of them are pertienent to any other version.
Maybe you missed something (or didn’t read the blogpost)?

Where would Woody like reports related to the other seven (7) versions, even if it’s about the Start menu after today’s out-of-band IE patch, or does he only trust reddit?

I’m sure woody is fine with reports on Windows 7. However, the start menu is completely different between Windows 7 and Windows 10. The Windows 10 start menu is far more fragile. A negative report on Windows 10 version 1809 would be useful and relevant to the reddit post about version 1903.

A negative report on Windows 7 is completely unrelated and simply not useful, because start menu breakage in Windows 7 would have an entirely different pathology compared to Windows 10.

For the record, no problem here on Windows 10 1903, I suspect third-party software and DISM issues are involved, like usual. The Windows 10 start menu is engineered in a very fragile way and is susceptible to these things. Unless we get wider reports like what happened with the 100% cpu usage bug, you can probably chalk this down to that.

Sunday September 29th till October tuesday 1st

*My garagists main pc (W10home.1809) got hit by an unexpected and unwanted and simply pushed -through his throaght- ”update” …..
All was set to keep updates away, they never ever touched some settings in the All-Settings_menu, and for shure they left the Windows-Update-Search_button if it was not there. Startmenu + Announcement button and other functions just didn’t work anymore.
So they pulled the powerplug, angry etc …..
*Exactly the same happened to another friend, a small office administrating, quite near….

Some little gnome is testing in some postcode-area’s?

I would like to say that I create a system image backup on a monthly basis during the week prior to Patch Tuesday. When a situation arises such as this one comes up wouldn’t that get the user back to that time very quickly so everything is back in order and then a discussion can be brought up of what happened? I haven’t had to do use a system image backup for I don’t know how long but I believe that would be the case.

I have 1803 (for another month or so) and installed this cumulative update several hours ago having retrieved it from Microsoft Update catalog. Microsoft states this is a REQUIRED MANDATORY cumulative update so I figured I might as well get it over with. I don’t use IE at all but that is irrelevant as it is tied into Windows itself so must be updated.

I look forward to 1809 or 1903 in November as I will finally be able to remove IE from Windows.

I haven’t had any problems since installing it. I use Start10 and no problems there.

Good news for me. HP Print killer KB4517211 I Delayed in Dnload Queue Disappeared and 1903 Cum KB 4524147 and NetFrmwk KB 4522738 inst’d rather quickly.

I Printed (prev had to Un-inst Print-killer KB4522016) and looked around Start Menu and All appears well. Had (3) new Macrium Images ready.

Edit: Forgot to look in Con Panel History and see KB 4520390 SSU,  and KB 4515871 Net Frmwk I prev uninstalled looking for a can’t-Print Fix inst’d also.

W10 Pro 22H2 / Hm-Stdnt Ofce '16 C2R / Macrium Pd vX / GP=2 + FtrU=Semi-Annual + Feature Defer = 1 + QU = 0

Question – I have IE installed only because Windows wouldn’t let me uninstall it.  But I never use it. Would I still have to install these iffy updates? I still running on Win 7, 64 bit. Thanks…

IE needs to be kept up to date b/c it is an integral part of the OS, whether you use it or not. Your system is vulnerable if you do not.

HOWEVER, that does not mean you have to install THESE buggy patches. You can update it when MS gets things ironed out.
