Should I be surprised that the “reservation notice” is not showing up on my system? It is an 8.1 Pro, and I have installed KB3022345 and KB3035583 (which were presented as “optional” on my system). Perhaps MS is rolling this out slowly. I’m really not in a hurry for 10, but was curious how common this situation is.

I have a few machines that have the upgrade notice icon showing in the Notification Area, haven’t seen any problem with it. Is it visible when clicking the tiny Up arrow on the left end of that area?

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"
    • #1507678

Nope. I have a number of other icons showing when I click the little up-arrow – but nothing about reserving the Win 10 update.

If you don’t see the Get Windows 10 app on your PC, it might be because:

      1.Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
2.Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
3.You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
4.Your device is not running genuine Windows.

Running Windows Update and installing any available updates will fix the first three issues. Need more help? Go to our Windows Community Forum.

PCs that we determine cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29, 2015. After July 29, 2015, we’ll enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PC’s compatibility if you choose.

If your device is managed as part of a school or business network, please check with your IT administrator about upgrading to Windows 10.

      Point 4 sounds interesting…

If you’re not running genuine Windows you won’t see it but come 30th July you’re gonna get nagged to Hell!

LOL A typical Microsoft fashion nagging.

My system is genuine, and has all the required Windows updates installed (including the two “optional” updates that are supposed to be involved here: KB3022345 and KB3035583). This is not a company system – it is a Dell system that was delivered with 8.0 and updated to Pro and then to 8.1 (or is is 8.1.1?).

Again, I’m not in a big hurry for this, but it is curious – and a bad sign, I think, for a “smooth” update process.

Just another nail in the coffin – I use Macs for about 80% of my work now, and this is likely to drive me to 99%. I used the PC primarily to run business software (I am now retired) and for games (primarily simulators, like Flight Simulator – and a better flight simulator – XPlane – is now available on Macs). So….

Further information. Thanks for the info about the MS page with support information. They provide a script to run to test – which I did- and it fails to find a required registry entry – and also loops trying to run the compatibility appraiser. The MS help instructions say two updates are required – and one (KB2976978) was not installed. It was available as an “Optional” update, and I installed it. (This update required a reboot.) I don’t know how this would ever be installed if it was optional. Anyway, after the reboot, I ran the check again and it fails again. It says

      Folder: MicrosoftWindowsApplication Experience
      TaskName Next Run Time Status
      ======================================== ====================== ===============
Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser 6/4/2015 12:29:38 AM Running

but I checked the Task Manager and I can’t find that process running. Maybe it is suggesting waiting for 24 hours? Crazy.

Needless to say, the update reservation icon has not appeared.

It’s really 8.1.2 you need (the Update after 8.1 Update 1): Do you have KB2919355 installed?

Could you provide a link to that? I can’t find it.

Is your PC set to an unusual time zone? You’re in tomorrow already.

The clock in my lower right hand corner says I am living in 6/3/2015. Where did you see the other time zone?

I do have the KB2919355 update installed – it was installed last April.

I have seen a few posts that says running the GWX program fixes the problem. I didn’t for me – and others report the failure too.

I understand MS has a very complex hardware environment to deal with, but once again, they are making this too hard.

      (1) Windows 10 should be free to everyone with hardware that will support it. (And, I mean one version – not Home, or regular or Pro.)
      (2) They should post a link to download and run a program that will evaluate your PC to make sure it can support W10.
      (3) They should support a link to download the update.

I didn’t realize that the 6/4/2015 you posted was under the Next Run Time heading.

I’m having the same issue with my Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 desktop. The required KBs are installed and I still don’t get the icon in the System Tray.

In my case, they exist and have a last run result of “The operation completed successfully”.

Yep. I have all 5 tasks. In the triggers folder, the three tasks have a status of ready, ready, and running.

I have a Dell 8.1 and also did not get the update icon. I ran the script which seemed to go just fine, but nothing happened. I have all updates mentioned in this thread. I found nothing in the Task Scheduler pertaining to GWX but do have them in the folder under system 32. Is there something else I can do?

    • #1507800

Task Manager doesn’t show GWX.exe. I have show processes fro all users ticked.

      Jerry

    • #1507801

Tried running Gwx.exe as Admin and nothing happens. I’ll just wait until its released and see if I can roll over the TP version in my dual boot. My Windows 7 install is 32 bit and I want to run my 64 bit TP install anyway.

    • #1507830

I don’t have a notice in the notification area, but the notification showed up when I opened Windows update.

    • #1507831

If you have a couple of minutes, the command line in Task Scheduler for “launchtrayprocess” is –

      %windir%system32GWXGWX.exe /tasklaunch

I was able to run it successfully in an elevated Command Prompt.

It might throw an error message for you (or might work), which might give us a clue on why others may not be getting the icon and notice.

Ran the command from an elevated prompt. No response and GWX.exe is not visible in Task manager with show processes for all users ticked.

    • #1507961

Same here – I have the gwx tasks defined, and they have all run and completed normally.

I also tried installing KB3050267 and KB3068708 because I read somewhere that they were also required. No change.

I now have the following (“Optional”) patches installed:

      KB3022345
      KB3035583
      KB2976978
      KB3050267
      KB3068708

I saw one post where the user claimed they had opened up all updates, and after that the reservation icon appeared. That appears to be tempting fate, given the history of some of these updates.

I assume I will eventually be able to do the (free) update manually. I guess I will just wait.

Go back through your Installed Updates as you also need KB2952664 – however, I think it has been causing problems for some and while Windows creates a restore point before installing any updates, you may want to create your own should you not have it installed.

    • #1507979

That KB is for Win7. I am running Win 8.1.

All Windows Updates are installed on this Win 7 laptop except for IE 11 and I’ve changed my WU setting to auto install and I still don’t have the notification.

You need SP1 on Windows 7, you don’t make it clear if you have that or not

So what wasn’t clear about “All Windows Updates” 🙂

And I’ve now installed IE 11 but still no notification.

In Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > GWX-Ins > Operational, are there any errors logged?

Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > GWX-Ins does not exist.

    • #1508282

No errors, just Information: “Information message: GWX Main: No existing tray window found”. I found 12 of those messages for today after start up.

Check Woody’s site this morning. He has a link to a script on the Windows Answers site (page 90 of the thread about the missing reservation icon) that seems to work (it did for me – I think my problem was a missing registry entry).

Now we wait for the real drama to begin….

David – Win 8.1 may also need an additional update (KB2976978) – from your post it’s not clear whether that update is also installed on your system. This may be an optional update.
You can read up on this at the following location:

      http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/i-want-to-reserve-my-free-copy-of-windows-10-but-i/848b5cce-958b-49ae-a132-a999a883265b

I got this from a response by a Microsoft Support Engineer (Geethu B – see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/cant-reserve-windows-10-update-on-my-toshiba/e7ef5495-5b7b-4bd3-b0be-2a64fed19436). The response mentions several updates that are also required for either Win 8.1 or (different set) Windows 7. I am having the same problem with my Win 7 machine.
      Hope this helps.
