• Resetting Default Documents Folder

    Ever since Geek Squad unnecessarily reformatted my hard drive and did not save an image. I have been trying to establish the default documents folder.  I have copies of documents in other folders and on one drive.  The One Drive Documents folder is the default for Word. I need to reestablish the My Documents folder and make it the default for word.

      In Word, go to File | Options | Save | Save Documents (section in the right) and set the folder in the “Default local file locations”.

      If you want to set the same default documents folder for all programs (not just for Word), then do the following:
      * Open File Explorer.
      * Right-click on your Documents folder, and choose Properties.
      * Click on the Shortcut tab, and put the desired folder into the Target window.
      * If you want to rename the Documents folder to something else (e.g. John-Documents), click on the General tab and give it a new name.
      * Click Apply when done.

      When I did this, it asked me if I wanted all of my documents to be moved to the new location; I told it no, and I then moved them manually; in this way I had total control over the move process – I moved only what I wanted moved, and left everything else alone.

      You can select a folder on a different drive for your default documents folder, if you want to. I have a 2nd hard drive which I use as my data drive, so I put my default documents folder on the data drive.

      Once you do the above procedure, most programs will treat the new documents folder as the default save location, unless you have set things different in that program.

        You have to change it in Word because there is a path which defaults to your OneDrive documents folder. It has nothing to do with the default local Documents folder under the User.

      Hi AW. How do I stop my docs defaulting to Wordpad and opening with MS Word? For some strange reason MS Office seems buried and even when I open it I can’t drag and drop docs into it to open that way. A solution would be greatly appreciated! Cheers. KC
