My wife and I go to Florida for the Winter. We left in early December, 2022 and powered down her computer completely before leaving.

I returned home May 11 and powered up her Dell desktop computer. It seemed to boot up properly but immediately starting to install the updates we missed while gone.

It installed a few updates and then had me do a “restart”. So far, so good. After the next update started, the computer crashed and tried to run a Windows diagnostics and rebuild correction program. That had no success at all. I also received a message that there was no administrator account available.

I did make a backup of this computer before we left home. My question is: should I just install the backup or should I do some diagnostics to make sure my SSD is okay? Everything seemed okay until the updating started.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I would try turning it completely off and turning it back on again as the first test.

I am no expert like everyone here, BUT I AM 100% sure it has to do with that Update. I would try to restore it from your backup

Just someone who don't want Windows to mess with its computer.

Zaphyrus, thank you for your response.

Unfortunately, this update (KB5022728, I think) had not been available when I made the backup. It didn’t became available until after we returned from Florida.

          Try Susan Bradley’s suggestion first.

When you say “that update” it’s unclear as to what the box would have been installing due to the cumulative patch model.

February 14, 2023-KB5022728 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 21H2 – Microsoft Support

I’m not tracking any crashing with that update.

Also when you say crashing – what exact symptoms?  Blue screen?

Thanks to everyone that has tried to help me. I think part of the problem may be a lack of information on my part. Maybe this response will help.

My wife’s computer is an HP Pavilion p7-1147c (no longer supported by HP) that runs well and has been upgraded with more memory and had the hard drive replaced with a solid-state one. My wife does email and internet searches 90% of the time.

I made an image backup of her computer and powered it down completely before we left for our winter Florida sabbatical. We returned several months later and when I powered up her computer it automatically started processing the updates we missed.

I restored my backup file and the computer worked fine until I did a ‘restart’ and the same thing happened again.

The only way my wife can use her computer is if I delay installing the updates for 7 days. She can then do everything she wants until the 7 days have passed and it tries to install the updates again. (She normally doesn’t shut off her computer unless we leave for an extended period.)

Does this make things easier to understand?

So you have both a feature update and normal updates trying to install at the same time.

What I would do in your case is go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 that site, click on update now, install the little exe file and run it.  Get your machine up to 22H2 using that process.
