Hi,
In vain I tried to restore Windows Photo Viewer to my Win10-1909 Pro 64 bit Thinkpad with a 2kb freeware registry fix from Major Geeks . . . . . . It didn’t work.
Do I need to remove this reg change, if so how is it done?
And is there anyone out there who can recommend a working solution to restoring Windows Photo Viewer which is, I think, a better tool, less system demanding, much quicker and easier?

AskWoody MVPAugust 8, 2020 at 1:47 pm #2287197This is what I used on Win 10 Pro 1909 x64:
1. Download Sean Brink’s Restore_Windows_Photo_Viewer_ALL_USERS.reg file to your desktop (from Option 2, Step 2 of his How to Restore Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 tutorial).
2. Start typing regedit into Cortana’s Search entry box. When Registry Edit appears as a found result, click on the option to Run as administrator then accept the User Account Control prompt. (You need elevated rights for this to work.)
3. When the Registry Editor appears, click on Import in the File menu, navigate to your desktop and select the REG file you just downloaded and import it… then close the Registry Editor.
4. Click on Start > Settings > Apps then, in the *left*-hand navigation pane, select Default apps.
5. In the right-hand pane, scroll down to Photo viewer and click on Photos. When the selection expands, scroll down and select Windows Photo Viewer:
6. Close Settings then re-open it again to check that the default Photo viewer has changed:
Post back to let us know how you got on.
Hope this helps…

AskWoody LoungerAugust 8, 2020 at 2:02 pm #2287205Thanks for the post @Rick Corbett. That is what I used to set up 1803 years ago. On 1803 the files are in “C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer”:
04/11/2018 05:33 PM 104,712 ImagingDevices.exe
06/08/2018 12:41 PM 2,272,768 ImagingEngine.dll
04/11/2018 05:33 PM 1,951,232 PhotoAcq.dll
04/11/2018 05:33 PM 46,592 PhotoBase.dll
04/11/2018 05:33 PM 1,744,384 PhotoViewer.dllAt a command prompt you can test that it works without changing the registry at all by entering:
“C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe” “C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll”, ImageView_Fullscreen fullpathtosome.jpg
Note that the fancy paired double-quotes shown above must be plain double-quotes for that command line to work so you must fix them after cutting & pasting from here.
Moderator Note: command with corrected quote characters to allow copy / paste
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe" "C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer\PhotoViewer.dll", ImageView_Fullscreen fullpathtosome.jpg

I noticed this on this post and on similar posts including other attached ZIP files.
No doubt Woody is aware of it and working on it.

EDIT… I was wondering why my post emboldened “‘” but I really don’t understand the formatting any more.
What the heck is (‘<label for=”bbp_topic_subscription”>Notify me of follow-up replies via email’ isn’t working either…</label>) tags?
There appears to be stuff going on in the background which there was no forewarning of…

Here’s an uploaded JPG file (which works) and an uploaded ZIP (which doesn’t).

Hi, Rick.
Your registry edit and excellent instruction info all worked like a charm.
Problem fixed and thank you for taking the time to assist in the solving thereof. For the record and those who are not yet aware, the Restore Windows10 Photo Viewer reg applet available on the ‘Major Geeks’ download site does not work.
Best regards,
Gordon. (UK)Gordski

And also the reg applet offered on ‘Windows Ten Forums’ does not work either:https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/14312-restore-windows-photo-viewer-windows-10-a.html#option2s5

It all seems to be back to working as normal, Woody.
After scanning the heck out of my own systems it appears that I had an additional problem which I *think* was caused with Firefox on my main device running out of internal resources and deciding to misbehave.
Mental note: Perhaps having over 300 open tabs isn’t such a great idea after all… but I’m so easily distracted. 🙂

I think the key thing is to run Regedit as administrator so you can import Sean Brink’s REG file with elevated rights.
Just double-clicking on the REG file doesn’t seem to work due to a lack of elevated rights to make *all* the required changes within HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
