Hello,
As can be seen in the TOC screen-grab, the Page Numbers are with the TOC entry instead of being on the Right Hand Side.
How can I get them to be Right-Aligned?
TIA.

Hi Bob,
It look to me as if the TOC styles are lacking the right-align tab, or it’s set too far to the left. Alternatively, there may be another tab that’s been set in the TOC and, because the TOC heading finish to the left of that tab, the right-align tab doesn’t get to do its thing.

Hi Bob,
From looking at your TOC1 style definition, it would appear that it has no right-aligned tab. You only have a left-aligned tab set at 1cm from the (left) margin. You would also need a right-aligned tab set at about 14-15cm to get the page numbers to line up along the right-hand side.

On my system (Word 2002 SP3), the TOC 1 style definition does not contain a right-aligned tab either.
– When I create the TOC, there IS a right-aligned tab, and the page numbers are right-aligned.
– If I then select it and press Ctrl+Q to remove direct paragraph formatting, the right-aligned tab is removed, and the page number jump to the left.
– If I update the TOC and select the option to update the entire table, the right-aligned tab is recreated, and the page numbers are right-aligned again.
Apparently the right-aligned tab is created by Microsoft as direct formatting!
Hello,
Ok I’ve attached a copy of the document with content replaced by placeholder text.
You guys/gals are really great and I want to say I appreciate all of you!
Hey, what I’m trying to achieve here is a perfect TOC with Right-Aligned numbers preceded by a line of full stops to separate them from the Text,
e.g.:
2 Heading Two
For some reason your TOC 2 style is totally missing
If you select a line that should be TOC 2
Select Format Style
Format the TOC 2 Styles tab setting
and add a tab stop at 16cm which is right-aligned and with a …. leader it works fine
I assume similar issues apply for TOC n where n is any number > 2

If I toggle field codes, the TOC jumps to the right, and the field brackets are inverted – see screenshot. So somewhere deep down in the document, there is a right-to-left setting, but I can’t find out where exactly. My system does not have extended support for middle-eastern languages.

I get a result similar to Hans, except I don’t get the behavior unless I update the field. As soon as I do, it reverts to right to left. Copying different styles (my own) didn’t change that. I can’t find the setting either & I looked at it under the “recover all text” option (using Word 2000).
Based on this, I would replace the template that I was using to create the document. See the steps in post 197827, if necessary.

I work in Word 2K so my solution may not work for you. My TOCs did exactly the same thing. The reason was that the TOC styles were built on body style, which was justified. So the TOC styles were also justified. I made them left justified (or flush left); that made them okay and all the page numbers then aligned to the right.
For TOC styles, I also put my right tab at the right margin (6.5″) and indent the para 0.35″ or more on the right. That means long titles will wrap inside the page number and won’t interfere with the reader’s ability to pick out the page number. Before I started doing this, some long titles would go all the way to the margin and I’d have to force them to break early.

Bob:
Is it possible for you to copy a couple of pages worth of text & the TOC, replace any confidential text with gibberish (or just paste “The quick brown fox, etc.” over it) & then upload the file so we can look at it? I also notice that your screenshot that shows the TOC right aligned after updating the TOC (in response to Hans suggestion) seems to indicate that there is some direct formatting involved.
