Script error on Skype startup

I’m trying to help a friend with a problem. During Skype login, a dialog box pops up with an Internet Explorer Script Error. It calls out a URL of

https://channel.skype.com/facebook/channel/?
uiversion=5.3.0.108&language=en

I have uninstalled Skype and reinstalled it, I uninstalled IE8 and then let Windows update reinstall it. The problem comes back. The error did disappear when IE8 was not installed (system reverted to IE6).

System is running XP SP3 with MS Security Essentials, and has Chrome and Firefox also installed in addition to IE8.

Any help would be appreciated.
