Seperate fields (excel 2002 sp3)

Hi, I have performed a cursory search but don’t really know what to search on, so please forgive me if this is a common question. I have a text file exported from an ancient access database that has so many errors I can no longer import it into a DB. I have managed to get excel to open it and would like to know if there is a way in excel to separate some of the data from “firstname” (Row f if this helps) where they have put both the first name and middle name in the same field (27,000 records) the only thing separating them is a space. I am using excel 2002 sp3 and xpsp2 . I really hope that I do not have to do this manually, so if anyone has a solution I shall be very grateful. Cheers gws

You can use
data – text to columns
delimited – space

And it will separate into columns at the space

Thank you so much for that, I just tried it and it did indeed separate the data but columns h to k disappeared? I have undone the action and the columns have returned so I shall try again and let you know how I get on. Thanks gws

If necessary, insert some empty columns to the right of the column you want to split.

Thank you both for your help, inserting blank columns and removing some weird code from a few of the cells and I now have separate first and middle names. Cheers gws
