I’ve just setup a new computer on a workgroup and transferred an access database from one of the computers that was in the group to the new one.
All in the same workgroup and shares setup for all uses to have access to the database.
Once one of the users opens the database, no other user can open it via any shortcuts or via a mapped drive, or by going directly to the location on the network and trying to open the database (.mdb).
The only way for the second user to get access is by opening Access and opening the database from there.

Any thoughts as to a cause? All permissions seem ok, otherwise each individual PC wouldn’t be able to open the database for themselves, it seems to be the sharing that is the problem. Tearing my hair out at the moment.
    Any help greatly appreciated

I have already tried creating a new database and also moving to a new share – both solutions gave the same problem as above

      Select Tools | Options…
      Activate the Advanced tab.
Has the check box “Ignore DDE Commands” been checked?
      If so, clear it.

Thanks Hans, no joy from that, or resetting other tick boxes either.
Eventually traced the problem to upgrading the PCs to IE7. Needed to add the location of the file in Internet Explorer via Tools…Internet Options…Security…Local Intranet…Sites…(remove the tick here against ‘automaticaly detect intranet network’, leave the remainder ticked) Advanced then Add the file location. Once this was done on each of the machines it worked without a problem.

I’m not really sure why this allowed it to work. I would have assumed that ANY access via the workgroup would have been prevented, rather than just multiple access to the file. Maybe it was just the ”automaticaly detect intranet network’ part that resolved the issue – not there to test it again at the moment but I’ll check on my next visit.

I know with others who have IE7 and share Access databases in the same way it has not been a problem – oh well, sorted now

Thanks for sharing the solution – it may well help others.
