Software restriction policy – how to remove?

I’ve had MS pagedefrag installed for a long time and use it infrequently.

On trying to use it recently, the system protests, telling me that it has been prevented by a software restriction policy, and refers me to Event Viewer.

Event viewer says that the Event ID is 866 and “policy rule {4b0a332b-5ee5-4907-9a8f-d27deceea287} placed on path pagedfrg.exe” which means absolutely nothing to me.

How can I remove the restriction?

You will need to hunt it down in the Group Policies Object Editor and reconfigure it’s settings. (gpedit.msc)

The article in your link refers to XP Pro. My system is XP Home, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when my system said “Windows cannot find ‘gpedit.msc’. Make sure etc etc … ”

What do I do now?

Do you have entries in that registry area that match the software you are trying to use?

Yes, there was an entry which I erased. After a reboot I still had the same problem, page defrag wouldn’t run, and I found that a new entry in the registry had been made.

You have a policy applied at logon that set the restriction. Try renaming page defrag and then running it?

I would still, however, love to find out how to remove the restirction, and possibly others.

Look for files in C:WINDOWSsystem32GroupPolicy directories and let us know what you find.

Sorry, I don’t know how to do it on XP home. I suspect you have a policy configuration file on C: and XP home behaves the same way as XP pro, it just doesn’t have the tools to modify the config. I’ll do some research and post if I find a solution.

There’s no GroupPolicy folder in system32, nor a Group one or a Policy one.

Maybe you are running an anti virus program that sets the policy at start up?

That hadn’t crossed my mind Paul, I didn’t know that they could do that. Are there any specific programs which you know can do it?

Not offhand, but any program can set registry entries, so look for anything that runs at startup.

Solved.

I had forgotten that I had installed EMET http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?FamilyID=c6f0a6ee-05ac-4eb6-acd0-362559fd2f04

Since I couldn’t find any way to change settings I uninstalled it and then deleted the relevant registry entry.
