Thanks to teenage children, I’ve had cause to try to clean up my hard disk thanks to extensive music and film downloads.

I had tried to find the files manually, but had a lot of trouble locating the offenders.

I searched and found Disk Recon.

I was able to find all the big files easily, and to clean up.

It’s an older computer, with “limited” space (5yo, it seemed like unlimited at the time).

And it’s got some nice features- like finding “duplicate” files- those with the same size and extension, with different save dates.

It has a 30 day trial period. That was all I needed to clean up my hard drive after two teenage daughters having left home recently.

I’m a fan of TreeSize Pro – and there’s a less featured version called TreeSize free

I just lurrrve SequoiaView for chasing big files & HD hogs. It epitomizes “a picture is a thousand words”.

Less is more, for me. I tend to think: can I achieve this with tools already there, in the OS? A simple search with the Search Assistant for, let’s say, bigger than 10,000 kB, and it shows a list that can be sorted in the usual Win Explorer way.

But I agree about “duplicate files”, there are different programs that can find such files (depending on how one would like to define duplicate).

But the results only come out in the one colour. grin

Correct! But I didn’t see the question as finding the brightest files; those with the most beautiful green colour; the relationship between the blue and the yellow files. evilgrin

          Hah, flying colours! grin
