AskWoody LoungerNovember 2, 2017 at 4:42 am #143284It’s taken some time, but clearly Microsoft has had trouble doing hardware and has not learned from mistakes with XBox 360 ring of death. Its not unfair to compare how well Apple does hardware compared to Microsoft. If Microsoft was attempting to repeat in the Surface what Apple did for Mac’s it has completely failed. I certainly expected the Surface line to be the premium showcase for Windows.

GuestNovember 2, 2017 at 3:30 pm #143446Better? Apple’s hardware is all soldered to the board, no way to upgrade. Microsoft partially emulated Apple’s design and made it worse by gluing the thing. (Rumor is that the newer models have the wireless radio chip locked down by serial number for each system board, it is for a fact also soldered to the main board.)
If you want to see what it takes to repair an Apple iPhone or other Apple computers go watch at least one iPad Rehab or Louis Rossmann video at home.

AskWoody MVPNovember 2, 2017 at 7:19 am #143301I’m glad it is becoming obvious to regular folks that the Surface is nothing more than a throwaway tablet. Hopefully people will get a heads-up from this latest problem that they might want to think twice before investing top dollar in this piece of junk commonly known as the “Surface”.

AskWoody MVPNovember 2, 2017 at 7:22 am #143304Microsoft would have been well served to assemble the best hardware people from the industry to design and build the Surface. It is clear that they didn’t do that. I would really like to know who designed such a piece of junk; and also, who approved selling it for top dollar, as if it was actually a top-of-the-line laptop.

GuestNovember 2, 2017 at 11:12 am #143352The flickering/shaky screen looks like a haunted screen = M$ may have been cursed.
The likely cause for this is over-heating, especially when the fanless and super-thin/compact Surface Pro tablet is being put under strain with demanding tasks like 3-D gaming. It should be better if the user does not use it for more than 1 hour, only for light tasks like web-surfing, reading emails, streaming Youtube videos and online shopping or only during snowy winter.
Power-users/power-programs and mobile Win 10/8.x tablets are like an oxymoron.
It was very foolish of M$ to put Win 8.x/10 on mobile tablets, instead of Win 7/8/10 Mobile. Apple and Google got it right by putting iOS and Android(= toy OS and toy apps) on mobile tablets and keeping MacOS and ChromeOS on desktops/laptops – Linux too.
Semi-trucks are not like cars. Mobile smartphones/tablets are not like immobile desktops/semi-mobile-laptops. M$ do not seem to know the difference.

I wonder if the glue holding the screen in place is melting from all of the heat in the Surface?

What a joke! Top dollar for this piece of junk!

GuestNovember 2, 2017 at 3:51 pm #143455Ah! for lack of saving a bookmark I wish that it would be possible for me to remember the link to a long post about a man who use his Surface everyday. The end result (possibly from heat) was the battery swelled like the plastic air pads used for cushioning light parcels during their shipment.

GuestJanuary 8, 2018 at 4:28 pm #157493Reply To: Widespread reports of blue screens (0X000000C4 and 0x800f0845) with Meltdown/Spectre patches for Win7 (KB 4056894) and Win10 1709 (KB 4056894)
My Surface pro 4, bought at Fnac in Bilbao (Spain) in January 2016, has been working well until August 2017. Since then, the screen flickers after 2 or 3 hours of work when it is still, and can not be used with texts or graphics, or with any program that requires reading on the screen. The flicker of the screen stops when moving the cursor and starts after 3 or 4 seconds of being a fixed screen. This makes the Surface not workable. Between 9/2017 and 01/2018, under warranty, we have sent to repair the Surface 3 times and it has not been fixed. Now it is again delivered at Fnac waiting for what Microsoft’s technical service says.
How many times is necessary to do it? The loss of time and the inability to use this device to work is unacceptable. Added to these facts, is the incompetence of Fnac and Microsoft that do not offer fix, or replacement or refund of money due to a product fail. It is a scam that this expensive high-end product has been put on sale without quality controls or, if these are isolated cases, the Surface is not replaced to the affected users.I hope it will be offered to all of us who are suffering from the neglect and unacceptable treatment of Microsoft a solution as soon as possible.
Meanwhile I recommend, after this bad experience, not to buy a Surface laptop until these cases of failure are solved satisfactorily. And also from my experience, if there are post-sale problems, the Fnac Bilbao service does not take care of the ni product offered to the client, devoting itself to diverting its responsibility.

GuestFebruary 15, 2018 at 4:38 am #167608i have same issue with type cover. i had been chatting with Microsoft support but not helpful. they don’t have a clue and they have different team to deal with different issues. so whenever i contact one eg: windows they transfer me to surface support. then this team say it’s not their problem and transfer another support and it goes on not fixing.. also the agents they have outsourced lack of practical skills in all advanced troubleshooting.. today i just posted on the same thread about type cover..thanks for the article.
