Hello!

Been trying to find out how to disable SysInternals Disk defrag at boot. Have looked just about everywhere and can’t find a way without reinstalling the OS(XP Pro SP3).

Can live with the defrag if needed but it’s an annoying delay on reboot.

Your Help will be appreciated!

Have you check in the “Task scheduler” to see if it can be removed.
Or run the base program and remove the option for boot defrag.

One straightforward option could well be to delete PageDefrag.exe…
Awfully difficult to run a non-existent program.

The sysinternals autorun utility should let you disable it.

If you are referring to Sysinternals PageDefrag then all you have to do is run the software and change your preference to “Don’t defragment (uninstall)”. It will remove itself from start-up.

If that fails you can use Sysinternals Autoruns utility as cafed00d has mentioned. Search for “pgdfgsvc.exe” and delete the entry.

You can also manually remove it from the registry but we’ll go in to that only if really necessary.

You could always use an app such as What’s In Startupand disable or delete it from there. If it’s in the startup group it will show up here.

Note: As can be seen I only have 4 apps set up to start with Windows. I will bet that many of you have 15 or 20 or more apps running in the background, most of which are not needed. These apps all consume system resources and slow your PC down!

I am a fan of Nirsoft utilities but this will not be picked up by this application (tested). This is due to the fact that the software runs in the same space as say a pre windows chkdsk.

You might want to try BillP Studio’s Win Patrol. It is very informative about what is running and let’s you disable or remove it. It also lets you see what non-MS services are running too. It is not a CPU hog and has allowed me to prune out all kinds of unneccessary browser “helpers”, ActiveX and other junk that arrives as part of app installs and Internet downloads.

You might want to try BillP Studio’s Win Patrol.

I don’t want to sound like Mr Negativity here but WinPatrol will not solve the original poster’s issue either. It does not detect pre-windows boot items such as chkdsk and in this case PageDefrag’s process.

Don’t get me wrong I am not disputing the fact that WinPatrol is a useful tool but it is a case of use the right tool for the job.

It would be nice if hotpepper251 did reply and let us know if he has successfully resolved the issue.
