System Image issue

When I purchased a new computer with Win7 Home Premium 64 bit, I made a system image shortly thereafter on an external hard drive (J). That first system image was 4.52GB. Since then I have made 4 additional system image backups – 1.27GB, 1.26GB, 1.46GB and 1.71GB. On each of the four additional backups, I got an error message that said “Backup skipped backing up J:WindowsImageBackup as it is on the backup target.”

I am confused about what I actually have should I need to restore my system at some point. Would I need to go back to the original 4.52GB system image and then one of the subsequent four images or what?
Any insight you can offer would be appreciated.

The backup size seems more like you are just backing up files. See Backup your programs, settings, and files for imaging information. If you have multiple disk partitions you must include all the partitions manually in the image backup.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Joe. This reply is delayed because I wasn’t aware I had a response (no e-mail notification). It just occurred to me that I recently changed my ISP and had new e-mail addresses. I advised Windows Secrets of the change, but not the Lounge. That has now been corrected.

So going from your response, you were right about the backups being just data backups. When I clicked on “Manage space” in the Back up and Restore window, I found that I had 10.22GB in data file backups – the sum of the backups listed in my original post. It also showed that I had 71.74GB in System Image, 28.91GB in Other Files and 38.18GB Free Space. More to the point is I found when starting another image backup that I needed 51.07GB of free space to make an image back up. So that is why every time I tried it, all that got backed up were data files.

When I did some poking around on the back up drive, I wound up deleting one of the older system images and now have plenty of free space to create a new system image.
