Does anyone know how I can determine what users are currently using/accessing the application/tables in a multiuser environment? When I need to perform maintenance on a table, I’d like to be able to notify everyone that’s currently using the system to exit the app so I can do my updating. Access does keep an .LDB file and I’m wondering if the user information can be obtained from it and an instant message can be generated to notify them to log out.

There’s also a free download called Jet4Admin that is available from http://www.fmsinc.com/, which allows you to administer a Jet database. This is a very powerful tool, though, and you add and remove databases from it–they go in to stay. However, it will not only show you who is logged on to the database you’re administering, it will allow you to throw them all out so that you can do maintenance.

This looks like a cool utility, went to download and found this.

I knew it worked with all versions, but I had forgotten that you needed 2000 to install. Thanks for pointing that out, Steve.

Outside of the services offered by JET 4.0 already mentioned, you can use the functions found in Msldbusr.dll, to read the .LDB file. Notification can occur on the netwrok level or be something that you build into the app. Here’s a link to a MSKB article that will give you the info/code that you need:

Thanks, Jim. I knew that article was out there, but I couldn’t find it.

Thank you all for the responses. I’m going to attack this one using the .DLL to read the locks. Hopefully, I’ll be able to write a routine to allow me to notify the users that they need to log out of the app so I can perform maintenance.

          Thanks again
