• Task Bar Sound Test Button No Longer Works

On one of my PCs (Windows 10 Pro v 1903) the task bar sound test button
in the slider no longer produces a sound. Sound on the PC is fine,
e.g., via Windows Media Player or Control Panel > Sound > Sounds > Test.
In fact the task bar slider controls the volume properly, e.g., for a
Windows Media piece. It’s just the button on the slider that doesn’t
seem to work anymore when clicked — changes color but does not make a
sound. Mute isn’t on, of course (at least not according to the volume
control). This makes me wonder if the slider test sound is associated
with some control in Control Panel > Sound > Sounds that is set to
“none”. If so, I couldn’t find it. In contrast, my other Windows 10
Pro 1903 PC does not have this problem. Jeff

It uses “Default beep” which is normally assigned “Windows Background.wav”:

Disable “ding” sound when changing volume on Windows (tested)

Thanks, that sounded reasonable, but apparently that’s not the problem.
I looked under Control Panel > Sound > Sounds and saw Default Beep was
assigned to a wav. Just in case, I reassigned it to a different wav,
clicked Test (sounded OK), then clicked Apply. But the slider Test
still stayed silent. I know the audio works because of the Sounds >
Test and because I can play Windows Media Player.

I also verified on another PC that I could change Default Beep and the
slider test would change to match the new sound. So something else is
going on than a misset Default Beep. Jeff

I has a similar problem with with a software package to edit music. The solution was as follows:

      – Bring up the main Settings screen within Windows.
      – Proceed to the “Privacy” section.
      – Click on “Microphone” in the left-hand list.
      – Modify the settings here to allow apps to use the microphone.

This should resolve the problem in Cleaning Lab, resulting from the restriction on the access of the sound hardware resources.
Not sure about why this happened but it worked.
