I keep getting periodic reports from several of my users (a small percentage) regarding what appears to be corrupted Excel files. These users create a worksheet, save it, close it. When they reopen the worksheet, it remains fully functional, but they cannot save any changes they make. They cannot even delete the file from Explorer. In all instances, there is a temporary file that has been created in the same folder with the name formatted as: Book1.xls~RFe825d71.TMP. The string after the tilda varies, but is always equally cryptic. I’ve never seen this type of temp file before. Sometimes, the temp file can be deleted and sometimes not, but deleting it does not affect whether the original file can be save over or deleted.
The problem does not occur with all worksheets they create. Some users, like me, have never encountered this behavior, but the ones who do have seen it more than once. Has anyone else seen such behavior?
