This is a test of attaching a .REG file.

(It contains combined settings for both Feeds > DSB (which I believe stands for Dynamic Search Bar) and Search related to the Search Highlights toolbar feature.)

Another test of attaching .reg file containing the settings to remove Windows Update pause.

Followup edit: same error as Rick but mine didn’t display the “Your account has the ability to upload any file” message in the Attachments: section that he sees.

      Yeah!

I’m not really sure what the difference between AskWoody MVP and AskWoody_MVP really is, but obviously that’s not what’s causing our .reg attachments to be rejected.

Betcha there’s a wordpress setting and a bbpress setting.  Let me get my patching evaluation done and look into the issue tomorrow.

I’ve just tried to upload a file called test.reg. The upload failed, as you can see in the post above.

However, a link labelled askwoodytest appeared in the post. Hovering over the link shows it’s pointing at this URL:

      https://www.askwoody.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/askwoodytest.reg

I’m not sure what’s going on.

Linked to a previous test file of the same name?

It’s not one I’ve ever uploaded… I’ve never been able to.

2nd test of attaching the .reg file that contains the settings to remove Windows Update pause.

Followup edit: still getting the “not allowed” error but, unlike Rick, it didn’t add a link to the file into the post.

It looks like I inadvertently used a filename of a .REG file which had already been uploaded (in April 2021) so a link was automatically created. Perhaps something to remember for future use, i.e. try to use unique filenames.

Bear with me on this.  We have settings and plug ins in place that SHOULD allow .reg files but something is still blocking it.

Testing a .zip version of the .reg test file.

So Kara and I have determined that it’s not bbpress or wordpress blocking .reg files.  I’m going to reach out to wordfence to see if it is doing it.

We *can* as a workaround, zip up the reg file and upload that, but we’re still trying to track down exactly what mechanism is blocking .reg file types.

This will disable Edge‘s new desktop Search Bar that appeared without warning and without being asked for.

You didn’t miss anything. I was trying to attach a .REG file (from TenForums) as a test and it failed.

The contents of the .REG file is this:

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      ; Created by: Shawn Brink
      ; Created on: March 16, 2023
      ; Tutorial: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorial-test/203448-disable-microsoft-edge-desktop-search-bar-startup-windows-10-a.html

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge]
      "WebWidgetIsEnabledOnStartup"=dword:00000000

      Hope this helps…

Got busy during tax season  – I need to test if wordfence is causing the block.  Bottom line both wp and bbpress should be allowing the reg file extension.  Let me put this on my todo list.
