I run a piece of free software called Fresh UI (from Fresh Software) which lets you see, and change, more Windows User Interface settings than you knew existed. The lastest release offers control over “Superfetch”.
    It offers options
    1. Disable
    2. Application launch prefetching enabled
    3. Boot prefetching enabled
    4. Prefetch everything enabled

An internet search on the merits of “Superfetch” reveraled mixed views, any comments from the experts here?

As with matters like memory management, I proffer the opinion that there enough clever people within Microsoft to know how to manage the internals of a Windows operating system They have been doing this for well over fifteen years, practically since NT 3.50, say. If you can find anything on the topic by Mark Russinovich, believe it!

For the average user and probably 95+% of all users, the default setting is almost certainly good enough 95% of the time > this is from someone who knows his own PC’s usage and takes a more proactive role in memory management 🙂

Sometimes tweaking can be taken too far. Superfetch is probably best left alone.

I am trying this program and see this setting for “Prefetch” but not for “superfetch”. The choices are the same as stated above. Mine was set to “Disabled.” What is the default setting in Windows 7 for this function?

      Thanks

I believe the default is enabled for both.

Yes, the default is as Ted said.
