I have Windows 10 installed on my Dell Laptop and have a Canon IP7240 Printer.

When I recently plugged my printer Cable into the USB port on my Laptop, I get I get a message “USB Device Not recognised”

I when into the device manager and under Universal serial bus controllers , there is device, “Unknown USB Device (Device descriptor request failed)”

I un-installed this, restarted my Laptop, but the error came back after plugging in the USB cable after restarting

It would be appreciated, if someone could kindly assist me in resolving this.

Try removing the USB cable, installing the Windows 10 printer drivers for the Canon IP7240 then – during the installation – wait for the prompt to attach the printer.

Once the driver is installed the device should then be recognised.

      Hope this helps…

As Rick points out, with some USB devices, you have to install the drivers first because Windows can’t recognize what’s connected without them.

Thanks for the link Rick. I downloaded the driver, but still get message once USB connected “USB Device not recognised”

I will take my Laptop & Printer to the IT Manager in my company to check it out. Will let you know how it was resolved in the end

        Is your laptop company-owned?

If so, then it would have been helpful to have mentioned this beforehand, in case your logon ID on a managed device doesn’t have the rights/privileges/permissions to install a hardware device driver.

          Hi Rick

The Laptop is not company owned, but where I have the odd hardware issue, the IT manager usually sorts this out for me. I prefer where possible to resolve my own issues using forums as It enables me to learn

I will certainly provide feedback to this forum once the issue has been resolved

Do you have another USB printer cable you can try?

I had that message in Device Manager this AM, shut completely down, pulled out the power cord, waited about 10 seconds, put the cord back in and booted up, message gone and all USB devices properly recognized and accessible.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

      Hi Rick

Just to let you know that one of the boards on the printer was faulty. Going to get this replaced today as it is still under guarantee
