Update hangs while installing update

My PC has been sitting for 10 hours at “Installing Update X of Y” What can I do. I seem to remember that Microsoft actually have free phone for Update problems – is this possible

For lower down the page, if you don’t have an install disk, then you can use a System Repair Disk to access the Recovery Environment to use the restore option.

That’s good news – was it the Fix it that did it as they don’t always work ?

There was an update stalled during installation and Even when I used task Manager to shut the machine off, WU kept coming back. The fix killed it and cleared the queue of updates waiting. The stalled update was marked as “cancelled” and I continued the update, being careful NOT to select the bad one.

What was the problematic KB and wonder if downloading it manually from MS would get it for you.

It was KB 2538243. I have decided to let MS win, and forget this patch!

It seems to be quite an old update https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2538243 and there are Google links of old where others have had problems installing it.

I don’t have it on this Win 7 laptop so it may have been superseded and removed when I run Disk Cleanup as an admin after each month’s updates.

I’m sure it was old, but I was updating a laptop freshly rebuilt, and Window identified 241 Updates! ! !
