    We don’t know what Intel’s patch fixes, and its schedule and scope is a little worrying.

    Update: This story has been updated at 12:04 PM to include Intel’s explanation of the new microcode.

    If your PC includes an Intel processor, it will likely receive a mysterious new update originally pushed out by the company on Friday.

    Three things about this release are somewhat concerning. First, Intel released the new CPU microcode as an “out of band” or unscheduled release. Second, it covers just about everything Intel has on the market today — dating all the way back to the 2017 8th-gen Core (“Coffee Lake”) chips. (The code itself is on the Intel GitHub page, listing all of the affected processors up to and including Intel’s most recent 13th-gen Core chips. Intel Xeons are affected, too.) Finally, the secretive and sudden nature of this patch raises eyebrows…

    * Windows 10 22H2, Intel Core i7 8750H Coffee Lake.
    Intel drive & support assistant hasn’t alerted me on new updates.
    My Lenovo Y530 is out of support so there is no hope waiting for Lenovo updates.

      I wonder if it is related to Windows 11 version 22H2? I’m just guessing; but it includes all the processors that might be compatable with Windows 11 (very few 7th generation Core i# processors are). My six months old 12th generation Core i-7 Dell XPS-8950 desktop computer running Windows 11 22H2 has been receiving new BIOS upgrades almost every month since I got it; and they’re coming through by Windows Update, not via Dell support. I am still waiting for this computer to settle down and behave in a normal stable and reliable fashion. Something crashes on it about once or twice a week, almost always something that came from Intel (an application, service, or hardware item). Sometimes the entire security service crashes, firewall and all, but then gets successfully restarted. Let’s hope this update fixes things. It seems to run better since I uninstalled and removed the Dell Support Assistant software.

      I never let Microsoft install BIOS firmware or drivers.
      Both are download directly from the vendor.
