• Update to Adobe’s latest DC Reader?

I’ve been getting nagged daily by a systray notice to update my Adobe Reader XI to the new “DC” version. I took the time to read about the new DC version and I don’t see any need to update. I don’t need “the cloud”. Does anyone know any other “good” reason for me to allow the update? I’m starting to understand why many people are fed up with Adobe’s Acrobat Reader and all its bloat.

If all you need to do is read PDF’s, there are a number of free alternatives…

That response begs the question of the OP as to What is the DC version and what does it do. I too have been receiving a notice to upgrade to the DC version and it looks like it is different from the plain vanilla Adobe Reader (the version numbers don’t even come close).

I use Adobe Reader and PDF-Xchange-Viewer but I don’t know what the DC Reader offers me, and I certainly don’t need the cloud.

Thanks for the link to the FAQ about Acrobat DC Reader.

From what I see, there is no reason to “upgrade” to the DC version. I prefer to keep everything on my own computer.

      FAQ on Acrobat Reader DC…

      https://helpx.adobe.com/reader/faq.html

That is the same link I went to and looked at all their reasons to get the new DC version. I’m not ruling out the possibility of someone maybe using some of these new features, but I certainly don’t need them. There are no security issues so I disabled the Adobe Reader Update task. Hopefully that will be enough to make the nagging notice stop.

Thanks for the alternatives, I may go to something else if this keeps up.

Keep in mind that Reader still needs security updates from time to time, you may want to have something in place that alerts you about that. I subscribe to the Dept. of Homeland Security’s CERT updates…

      https://www.us-cert.gov/

Thanks, I just hope there will be a way to just get security updates to the Reader I have without having to get their latest and not necessarily greatest bloated “DC” version. Hopefully that’s not asking too much. I’ll enable the Update task from time to time and see what they have to offer. BTW, I didn’t get any nag notice today.

I turned the nag notice off today since I don’t do anything in the cloud. I hope they still update Reader XI.

I hope they still update Reader XI.

Just open Reader XI and pull down the help menu and you will find the “check for updates” link for XI not DC.

Thanks JC. I just checked for updates using the pull down help menu and there were no updates for ver. XI. Also, when I start the Reader program I get a little tile in the center that shows recently opened files and other Online Services. One of those services is “Store Your Files Online”. So it seems I already have this Cloud storage of a sort if I wanted to use it. I still don’t see the need for cloud storage when I’ve got a 1.5 Terabyte HDD and a 1 TB external USB drive.

I agree completely. I like to keep everything close by in my own network.

Reader XI works fine for files on my local drive and for files on other hosts connected within my home network.

    • #1537625

I use to have the double digit version of Reader but somewhere along the line I ended up with a different version number to what is the current format, of which 2015.009.20069 is the latest and I think they are phasing out the v11s.

    • #1537691

I have the DC version, and I don’t do anything on the cloud. There’s probably something I need to set to make the default save folder on my local hard drive, but in the meantime, I don’t save anything to the cloud.

I do occasionally open a file directly from the internet into Adobe Reader by putting its full URL (including the file name) into the File Open window then clicking OK. That works better than opening it in my browser.

But that isn’t exactly the same as the “cloud”.

When you click on Adobe Reader at http://www.adobe.com then click on do you have a different operating system etc. you will get dropdowns to select your OS and it will give you a 11.0.## but for Win 7 it only gives 11.0.10 whereas I’ve seen someone on another forum who managed to get 11.0.12.

However, for me to update to the standard 2015.009.20069 I’ve had to uninstall the older version first which has never happened before.

      • #1537740

For Win 7 it only gives 11.0.10 whereas I’ve seen someone on another forum who managed to get 11.0.12.

I tried the web site and I get the same result. I notice that at the Adobe home page, the only version of Reader they currently offer is DC.

You can download the 11.0.10 version of Reader as Sudo15 described and then use the Help menu to upgrade to the latest version which is 11.0.13.17.

I suspect that in the future, this method of upgrade will result in the DC version that Adobe seems to be pushing.

        11.0.11 & 11.0.12 are updates (.msp) to 11.0.10. I downloaded them from: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/11.x/

11.0.13 is the “DC” version, which I downloaded also but haven’t installed on any of my systems (I’m not interested in “cloud storage”).

In the 11.0.xx versions you can turn off the automatic updates via EditPreferencesUpdater and choose the “Do not download or install updates automatically” option.

A month or so ago I installed DC Reader and found it no longer showed a little window in the bar at the top that let me type in a % number to adjust the reading qualities of the document. I have always picked my own resolution, and often chose something like 88% rather than what I’m offered – say 75% or 100%. No doubt if I had a touchscreen I could easily deal with this by swipe methods, but none of my four computers have one. I gave DC one day, then uninstalled it. Adobe no longer seemed to offer 11 (I didn’t know of the link offered above) so I had to find another download site. I won’t try DC again till I hear they’ve replaced the sizing option I prefer.

Zoom controls are still on the tool bar of a default installation so that you can easily switch to any % level.

You can also add a Dynamic Zoom control to the tool bar for continuous zooming between 1% and 6400%.

11.0.13 is the “DC” version, which I downloaded also but haven’t installed on any of my systems (I’m not interested in “cloud storage”).

Version 11.0.13 is the latest update to Adobe Reader 11.x, it is not the “DC” version (and it doesn’t come with all of the baggage of the “DC” version”.) See the release notes.

The latest release for “Adobe Reader DC is “2015.009.20079”

I didn’t like Adobe Reader DC, so I uninstalled it and installed Adobe Reader 11.0.13 successfully in the following order (for EN-US):

          11.0.10
          11.0.11 Update (Patch)
          11.0.12 Update (Patch)
          11.0.13 Update (Patch)

(I don’t know if the patches are cumulative, so I installed them in order…)

That being said, to install the latest Adobe Reader DC properly:
          Adobe Reader DC 2015.009.20069
          2015.009.20077 Update (Patch)
          2015.009.20079 Update (Patch)
(Again, I don’t know if the patches are cumulative, so I install them in order…)

          😡 Update 😡
Apparently Adobe updated their FTP server policy, requiring a login to use their FTP servers too direct download their software; so these links no longer work (as of December 8, 20015) without an authorized login. Sorry… :(:
I guess Adobe doesn’t want users to have a direct download to the latest versions of their free readers. They instead prefer people to use their ridiculous download manager via a stupid installation stub.

Adobe is also decommissioning their distribution direct download page for Flash Player on January 22, 2016; probably for the the same draconian reason…

You can still download updates from their Adobe Reader Downloads page…

Adobe must have backtracked upon their FTP Server policy or changed their configuration, because (as of December 11, 2015) the Adobe FTP site and the download links I listed in a previous post now work properly. 😎

Whenever you download software, it is always best to download directly from the producer and avoid download sites that may install additional junk.

After a few nags to get the DC version I decided to do what I’d been contemplating for a few days now, I un-installed Adobe Reader XI.
I reasoned that since I can create PDF versions using LibreOffice, and since Edge can display PDF documents to my satisfaction, I no longer have a need for Reader or DC or whatever…

I normally ignore Adobe Reader updates for a while to wait until any problems have been resolved.

But I’ve just updated, and it’s this new “DC” version. DON’T.

I’t a mess and a time waster. The only way to get out of it is to use + .

I’ll probably now have to remove it and see if I can locate an old version.

          Thanks.

I’ve already un-installed the new unusable version (DC) and downloaded from an Adobe website, found by Google, AdbeRdr11000_mui_Std.zip and AdbeRdrUpd11013_MUI.msp .

Next session with W7 Pro, I installed 11 and was back to normal.

Then in another session, I installed 11.0.13 and back to a usable version.

Note from past experiences with Windows, a re-boot between actions results in a smooth system.

I don’t know how along the line that I changed from v10 or v11 to the newer version but I now have Reader DC, although as I only use it for reading my online utility bills and the occasional PDF download, as long as it works, it does for me.

After I read this I re-enabled the Adobe Reader Update Task in the Task Scheduler Tool of CCleaner tools to see what would happen. I re-started the computer and went on to other things. Sure enough I got a message from the systray that there was an update for Adobe Reader XI and to click on the message for more info. When I did I saw that it was the Adobe DC Reader update. So I clicked it off, went back to scheduled tasks and disabled the updater once again. Guess I wasn’t as lucky as you lumpy. I got my hopes up for that elusive 11.0.14 update.

Interesting. The only reason that I knew there was an update was that I got a notification window from the latest version of Secunia PSI that Reader XI required a security update. I closed it out and opened reader XI and clicked on “Check for updates” and low and behold there was a newer version.
When I clicked on “More” to make sure, it took me to an Adobe page that starts out with the descriptions of the updates for DC but scrolling down the page showed that there was an update for XI. I updated my other win 7 machines also with no problems.

I did as you said, brought up the “Check for updates” and it indicated there was an update. The last time I tried clicking on the download or update button it started downloading the DC version, and I stopped it. This time when I clicked on “Details”, it brought up a webpage that did show all of the updates including the 11.0.14. When I clicked on that I got another selection of blue links to choose from. There is 11.0.14.msc and 11.0.14 (MUI).msc (I hope I’m remembering those correctly. Anyway, which one am I supposed to click on? This seems to me to be a complicated and annoying way to go about getting a Security update.

If you already have the DC version then you’ll get a not applicable or some other similar message if you try to download 11.0.14 on top of it.

You will need to uninstall DC and then download 11.0.14

Previously when I tried it, I don’t recall seeing the extenders on them.

Okay! I brought up Adobe Reader and clicked on “Check for Updates” under Help. When it reported that there was “an update” (no specifics given at all) I bit the bullet and clicked download. When it was finished I had gotten the proper update I wanted – 11.0.14! BUT I have to say that I had to put myself completely at the mercy of Adobe to give me what I wanted because there was nothing to indicate what I was going to get! I did a restore point ahead of time just in case I got the DC version. Whew! They expect us to be so trusting – in this day and age!

Some times older versions have to be uninstalled before the up date can install.

Adobe Reader used to be bad for this, but somewhere around (6? 7? 8?) their installer routinely began uninstalling the previous major version. Thus you should no longer have to perform manual uninstalls. Unless you have weird problems. Then, by all means, go ahead and uninstall it yourself.

If you don’t mind having the DC version (there’s no real harm in having it) you may do well to just leave well enough alone. My guess is that we’re all eventually going to end up having to go with it, or go to something else. If you decide that you don’t want it and you have a recent restore point, then you should be able to go back to the original version you had before. I don’t think there’s a better way.
