When I started up my computer today, I found that a URL had been pinned to my taskbar that I had accessed through Firefox yesterday… but the pin was through Chrome. (To be sure, I checked both browser histories.) I did not intentionally pin this URL, and I’m not certain when or how this occurred. I did a full virus scan, as well as the free Malwarebytes scan, and both scans came back clean; in addition, the pin did not return on a restart.

I suppose it’s possible I accidentally pinned the URL somehow, but how could it have jumped browsers like that? Has this happened to anyone else?

An update: opening Chrome again and right-clicking the tab in the taskbar, it says there is something pinned to Chrome, the same URL. When I hover over the URL, there is an option to “Unpin from this list.” I’m not certain what list this is, or where I can view it in the browser, but I hope this provides more insight for others to help.

This is a Windows location, not in a browser.
      C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
      — careful of the line break:  . . .\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Thanks for the location guide! After unpinning the URL, the only things in that location are the items I’ve chosen to pin. From what I have found, that list of pinned items from right-clicking the Chrome tab is related to the jump lists that Windows makes available… though I have disabled jump lists for a long time.

The question still remains of how the URL got pinned to Chrome in the first place. As I said, I cannot recall having chosen to pin anything yesterday, especially taking a website from Firefox and transferring it to Chrome. Also, if jump lists are disabled, accidentally pinning something seems quite difficult.

Exactly what I wanted! Thank you.

All you need to do is to drag a URL into any browser ‘launch icon’ on the Taskbar.
It then appears in the ‘Pinned List’.
It could be dragged by accident.

Oh wow, yeah, this seems very likely to be what happened! Thank you so much for the explanation and animation, it was very illuminating and resolves my confusion!
