What might be causing this problem?

Suddenly I got this message at the bottom of my screen, that ‘google.com is not responding’, and my laptop just sort of freezes up.

Then just after that I sought to put this posting on this forum, and it freezes up again with the message that ‘windowssecrets.com is not responding’

I’ve actually had this sporadic occurrence many times over the few weeks. And I was visiting a friends house a few miles from me, and he had it happen to him once. I ask if he had ever seen this before and he replied, no.

I don’t think it has anything to do with connection speed as his is 10 times greater than mine,….but they are both that wonderful monopoly Comcast

Which browser are you using?

I’m primarily using IE as it is the one I am most familiar with, and the favorites set-up etc. I just tried to look up which version, but I am finding it hard to find?
It came on the laptop (Acer) when I bought it, and it is running Win7, home edition, 64 bit.

The only firewall I have (to my knowledge) is the sign-in password I have set up and use each time I sign on.

I have tried using Firefox at times, but if I remember correctly I experienced some problems there as well,…(sorry I’m trying to remember these numerous events).

This ‘not responding’ event seems kind of erratic, and less likely to happen as I go along in a session of usage.

Click on Tools – About Internet Explorer and it will tell you which version you are using.

As the problem is across browsers, try those netsh commands, rebooting or even switching off the router.

Sorry, still did not find such a reference under ‘tools’ ??

It could be a very busy time on the internet, or a problem with a router on the internet. If the problem resolves itself after a couple of hours it is likely to be an internet issue.

cheers, Paul

One thing I always check is in Control Panel, Internet Connections [or Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options] and the Connections tab then the LAN settings. Unless otherwise needed by the ISP/Internet Service Provider the first item about Automatically detect……. should be the only thing with a checkmark. If the Proxy section has any item checked and the ISP hasn’t specified anything it could be an infection of some sort has messed it up.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

I would temporarily disable any third party firewalls. You might also want to try a different browser.

You could try hitting Refresh but when it becomes annoying, resetting IE to defaults will sort out any add-on problems – but I normally start with these commands from an admin command prompt, although it could just as easily be the reboot that sorts it.

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Then reboot.

Going Tools – Internet options and under the Content tab, Clear SSL state.

Under Advanced scroll down to Security and ensure that Use SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are unchecked and that Use TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 are checked and in extreme circumstances, switch the router off for a minute or so.

When you reset IE, Use SSL 3.0 is default checked so that will need to be unchecked and the TLS will need to be re-checked.

In mine it is the option directly below Internet options when clicking on the Tools cog.

I’m using IE 10 but I think it’s the same for all versions of IE if I remember correctly.

• #1486312

With the changes of showing/not showing toolbars I find it easier to go to the Control Panel then Internet Options.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"
• #1486330

Don’t have an option ‘below internet options’

And I tried going to the ‘control panel, internet options’, and could not find it there, either??

I even right-clicked on ‘properties’ and did not find it there?

Why should it be so difficult to find what version is running on one’s computer??

• #1486378

There are two other places you can check for your version, but I don’t know why you haven’t got About Internet Explorer in Tools.

The first one is to go Programs and Features then click on Turn Windows features on or off in the left pane.

Next to the box for IE it should give its version when you have updated from the base version.

The other is in Installed Updates – scroll down until you see the update for IE as all versions up from the base version are installed as Windows Updates.

Knowing which version you are running doesn’t fix your problem though.

I guess,…I don’t know.

I finally got fed up with IE and started using Firefox,….much more pleasurable so far.

(I also read somewhere that Microsoft was going to stop supporting IE ??)….just another reason to get away from this erratic company

It will be a long time before MS stop supporting IE, far too may corporates rely on it.

They are introducing a new browser in Windows 10 codenamed Spartan however.

Sidenote:I use Palemoon as my browser. It’s a fork from FF so has most of the good bits and drops the bad bits!

R.I.P. Internet Explorer: Microsoft Corporation Kills Off One of Its Signature Products
http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/04/06/rip-internet-explorer-microsoft-corporation-kills.aspx

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/02/26/microsoft_spartan_browser_rationale/

Microsoft says it decided to start from scratch with a new web rendering engine for Windows 10 because keeping up with web standards while maintaining compatibility with older, noncompliant versions of Internet Explorer had simply become too much of a burden.

“Fixing long standing interoperability bugs with other modern browsers could actually break sites who have coded to the IE-specific behavior,” Microsoft’s Charles Morris observed in a blog post on Thursday, echoing a lament that web developers have voiced for a decade or more.

Recent versions of IE have included various backward-compatibility modes that force the browser to repeat the errors of earlier versions. But for Microsoft, the need to essentially maintain two browsers simultaneously – one that did things the IE way and one that did them properly – was making it difficult to keep up with the rapid pace of web standards development.

So I now see why they are trying to ‘kill-off’ the old IE. But you know I have been so disturbed about this company coming out with ever new operating systems that just are NOT really ready for the market, then playing catch up on the client’s time, and at his expense and venerability.

Well wouldn’t you know I got the ‘not responding message’ using Firefox this morning (and some little message indicating some data transfers from other sites such as google and facebook, etc, were taking place)? I don’t even go on Facebook? I didn’t get time to write down exactly what was happening, I just know that my browser stopped working, and I got this message that it was ‘not responding’ ??

I did happen to notice that the google message had a ‘Jax’ associated with it,…something like ‘google/jax’ . Since my internet provider Comcast connection is in Jacksonville Florida, I’m wondering if that ‘jax’ was associated in some way??

Following that I immediately ran Malwarebytes and got nothing.

And just yesterday I did a complete cleaning of my system with AVG.

Have you considered AVG could be the problem as Roland has inferred ?

Boot up into Safe Mode with Networking and use that for a while to see if you still get the errors – audio won’t work though but for testing purposes, you probably don’t need it.

In my IE Tools it’s listed as About Internet Explorer and is the last item in the list, but there again, I don’t use the Menu bar.

“This is all very confusing really” (Neddy Seagoon AKA Sir Harry Secombe of the BBC Goonshow).

When I check it out in IE11 I find “About Internet Explorer” under “Help” in the “Menu bar”, under “Help” in the “Command bar”, but it is, as you say Sudo15, the last item under “Tools” (the “gear” icon) in IE11. Hmm.

Another possibility [remote as it might be] that can be checked: monitoring, reporting and/or security programs that might be a little too assertively set, example: scanning each file called into action, reporting on each and every action done by anything anytime anywhere within the computer, etc. I did that awhile, ended up having to dial back some of the monitoring, reporting & protecting 🙂

I think i had that problem along time ago when I was running the fully subscribed-to version of AVG on my older XP computer. I found it was slowing things down too much,…but not keeping it from responding.

I only recently switched from Security Essentials to the free version of AVG, upon several recommendations. There are those times that I do suspect the initial booting-up might be slowed by AVG, but I’m not so sure that is my problem now. If it is I might just have to go with no antivirus,…and that is not too appealing.

Wasn’t that part of the problem with IE?

I just did a speed test from this site
http://www.speedtest.net/

and had a download speed of 43.5 mbps. So that certainly should not be the problem?

Then I went to get back onto this forum site via Firefox, and I saw down in the bottom left hand corner of the screen (just above the start button) a running collection of notices that data was being transferred from a whole multitude of sites, including facebook etc,…and that slowed up my connection to this forum. What the heck is that??

• #1499051

You could try Process Explorer to see if anything untoward is running on your computer.

To ensure VirusTotal is enabled, click on Options – hover over VirusTotal.com and check its box as well as ensuring Verify Signature is also checked.

Any items listed with a red highish value/~50 will be suspect.

I assume you have done an anti malware scan with something like the free version of MBAM ?

Hi beiland,
It sounds as though the webpage you are attempting to display is loading content or running scripts that are associated with those other websites. You can check this by viewing the initial downloaded html, which in the version of Firefox I use is accomplished by clicking “View” and then “Page Source”.

If you are not running the NoScript addon in Firefox, downloading it and installing it might preclude some of the third-party content or scripts and thereby enable the webpage to take less time to load.

If viewing the page source of the webpage you are trying to load does not reveal any references to the third-party stuff that’s trying to load, then perhaps the third-party stuff is from the previous webpage that you visited. In that case, perhaps it would help, prior to accessing a new webpage, to manually stop the former webpage from loading.

If you’ve been doing all of the above and still have the issue, then I have no idea.

Dave

Thanks Dave, I’ll have a look at that.

In the meantime this morning another ‘web page not responding’ notice came up as I was reading one of my gmail emails from a friend. (some illustrations from Norman Rockwell). As I was scrolling down the illustrations it suddenly stopped and gave me this ‘not responding notice’.
I don’t recall exacting how it gave me a notice that it was due to some script problem,…
Script: https://mail.google.com/_/scs/mail-static/_/js/k=gmail.main.en.mKSAGOfF0Bg.O/m=m_i,t,it/am=PiMa4U7G_UGMM2SXPkDt338_u6TY2edVfYQJINlZAP83-38Avwf20RYy/rt=h/d=1/t=zcms/rs=AHGWq9BH4vIHusoPNpBCHaIJr_kFqbiI-g:319

It ask if i wished to ‘debug’ it, and I said yes,…a partial new screen opened with a whole lot of gibberish, then I am unsure as to what, if anything happened?

• #1500389

Just discovered I had this more recent subject thread going about this subject. So I will repeat my posting I made on the ‘out-dated’ one

I got fed up with IE and switched over to Firefox. That seemed to be working fine for some time now, but in the last several weeks I’m getting this ‘website not responding’ message very often.

And VERY often now it is when I first go to get on the internet when I first turn the computer on and double-click the Firefox icon that I have set up to take me to the Google home page. It either takes forever, or just doesn’t work and gives me some ‘not responding’ message.

It may just freeze up there, or give me some small window that I can ‘debug’ this script error. If I select debug it doesn’t lead me to anywhere that I understand?? …and it doesn’t fix my problem.

I’m just wondering if there is something wrong with the version of Firefox that I have on this laptop,…and that perhaps I should wipe it off and download it again,…anew?

PS: I have an older desktop computer running XP that appears to have no problems with this ‘not responding’ stuff,….and its using the Firefox browser with the same Google home page.

I simply reload, try again. I think it’s more of servers’ caching situation rather than our computers.

My computer worked fine for about 2 hours, then right in the middle of my making a posting on one of the boating forums I have belonged to for many years, I get the not responding message again, and its freezes up

I then come over to this forum, and again my computer stops and tells me this site is ‘NOT RESPONDING’ !!!

I got several messages such as ‘plugin not working’, and this…??

I don’t know if I’ve suggested to you to run this tool http://www.anvisoft.com/browser-repair-tool.html

It can sort out some browser problems but clicking on the browser icon in the left pane will show you what it default resets.
