can anyone explain to me where abouts the “key” words go when designing a web page/site that allows browsers to find my site.
I have been advised that i can possibly push my site up the listings?????
    Thanks Ian

What you referring to are the META Tages for Content. They go in the Head Section, amongst the other items, as follows:

      [page title name here]

This really is a Web Site Design question. Thus I am moving this thread to that Forum.

Although keywords are a part of your search engine listings, each engine uses its own algorithms to determine your ultimate ranking. If you are serious about getting upwards in the listings, you might consider an automated software tool that will submit your website on a regular basis as well as make recommendations on improving rankings.

I have used and can recommend WebPosition Gold for this task. Just be sure that you give this process some time; changes in your rankings will not happen quickly.

Every article I’ve read about SEO (search engine optimiztion) says it doesn’t help at all to constantly resubmit your site to the search engines (and some consider it a nuisance and so you risk being banned). Many of those programs or services that claim to improve (or even be so bold as to ‘guarantee’) better ranking are just scams to get your money. However, even the so called ‘experts’ in the field disagree among themselves so it’s even harder for the average person to know what’s true and what’s fluff.

I find the best source for how to get better rankings are straight out of the webmaster pages of each search engine like http://www.google.com/webmasters/%5B/url%5D. For personal sites, it’s very difficult to get any placement since the #1 way to get noticed by the search engines is to have your site referenced by other sites – and how many personal sites does that make sense for?

No matter what you do though, it can take months before any change is noticed (as you said too).

I also agree that it’s difficult to get picked up by major search sites, at least at first. Interestingly, if you submit your site to several lesser search sites (like dmoz) the larger sites (like Google) will eventually feed from the smaller sites.

It’s a great feeling to finally see your site on Google!

Also, you can always pay to be a sponsor… That will get your site noticed pretty quickly – even if it’s not the cheapest solution.

Hey great minds think alike!! bullseye A few weeks ago I completed a site for my husband’s home business (engineering consulting, etc.) and did just what you suggested – requested it be listed in DMOZ and will soon get a Google ad for placement in his main categories of interest (which fortunately aren’t overly croweded with millions of hits). Since I can’t yet get any big sites to link to his site, this is the best thing we can do right now. It’s only been a few weeks since I submitted the site to DMOZ and it doesn’t show yet but soon I hope. I didn’t know about this at first but read about it as a recommendation in Google’s webmaster stuff.

            Thnx,
            Deb

One thing that MAY help is do a advance search on some exact phrase with a limited to YOUR website (Domain).

See the options of Google in the “Advance Search”. http://www.google.com/advanced_search%5B/url%5D
