Where is it coming from? (Excel 97 sr2)

I recently had my harddisk wiped and restored including re-installing MS Office and now every time Excel starts up it tries to load a certain workbook with macros that have no value to me and slow the workbooks I have developed for some unknown reason.

Before anyone says “virus” I know what this mystery workbook is used for by other departments but it has no value in my job and as I said it interferes with my existing workbooks (BTW, no it is not security related either).

I removed the actual workbook from the harddrive but now Excel wants to hunt for it every time the application is opened. I have nothing in my startup folder and no personal macros workbook at all so where is Excel getting the instruction to load this odd workbook ?

Have a look at , Tools, AddIns and check to see if the workbook is listed and if so make sure that it is unchecked. That shoul dremove it from the list and prevent Excel from trying to load it at start-up.

Also look for any *.xlw files. If someone saved a workspace with the file in it every time it opens XL looks for that file.

You might try the following

1. Perhaps you have custom toolbar buttons attached to macros. Toolbar customizations are stored in a file with extension .xlb in your Windows folder (WinNT for Windows NT). Its name is username8.xlb where username is your logon name, or Excel8.xlb if you don’t use logon names on your PC. Try and see what happens if you move or rename this file and then start Excel.
2. Excel has 2 potential startup locations:
   • The standard startup file location C:Program FilesMixrosoft OfficeOfficeXLStart (exact path depends on where you installed office).
   • The path set in Tools/Options…, General tab, Alternate Startup File Location.

Check whether the Alternate Startup path is set, and if so, whether there are any files in that location.

Thank you Hans… It was an oddly named shortcut in the C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeXLStart directory that was causing the problem. Much appreciated!
