Which language(s) to learn?

Hello,

I wanted to build an online helpdesk application, so users create an account.

Then they open a “ticket”. There is a timer which measures how long it take the IT Department to fix the issue.

The challenge…… I did programming in university many years ago.

So…. which language(s) should I learn?

Are there any shortcuts, i.e. development environments where I can create such a web/cloud based application with little actual coding?

If I need to learn a number of languages, what are they and which part of coding does each one cover?

What about the graphics – a polished look and feel is essential. What is the best tool for this?

I am looking for the easiest possible way to achieve this.

Off the top of my head – HTML, PHP and MySQL.

In my opinion the best shortcut is to find one of the many free Help Desk systems available then adapt it to your own particular needs rather than starting from scratch.

Google “Help Desk”, “free Help Desk” and “PHP Help Desk” for likely candidates e.g. SpiceWorks, HESK, TechExcel ServiceWise, Liberum and FHD to name a few.

Also, have a look at Request Tracker. It uses Perl instead of PHP and has a good website, documentation and community wiki.
