A Windows 7 system had not been update in about 6 months. So, I installed all the patches via Windows update in sequence. Last available patch was dated April 23rd. Then, when all done and rebooted, I ran Windows Update just for fun and this showed up

    Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1: September 20, 2016

It dates back to Sept. 2016 and was last updated Nov. 2017.   Anyone have any clue what’s going on? Certainly Microsoft does not.

The servicing stack is a stand-alone patch. It has to be installed by itself (with no other patch). It will not show up in the queue until all the other pending updates  are removed (installed or hidden).

You need to go ahead and install that update.
