Win 10 upgrade fails w/error 800070005

Win10 upgrade icon was missing. Found GWX.exe and ran to enable icon for upgrade.
Attempted upgrade from 8.1 PRO to 10. D/L OK and showed preparing to install. Then as the install started it immediately failed with error 800070005. Tried several times on both mine and wife’s identical PC’s with same result.

Interestingly, had previously upgraded older Win 7 PC, Win 8.1 HP laptop and an old Hp laptop that originally ran Vista and was upgraded to Win 7 then to Win 10 Home with no problem at all.

Research indicated it is a permission problem. Normal Windows updates install with no problem on both machines. Suggestions were to get the Media Creation Tool and use it to do an in-place upgrade OR go to Tweaking.com and run their repair tool and then attempt the upgrade from the GWX icon.

Both machines are set up with SSD’s as boot drives and all data is on a second HDD with File History running.
Any thoughts on this as to which way suggested previously to go or any other method to solve this?

Since I’ve successfully utilized both approaches in the past, I’d suggest making a system image first and then trying either approach. If you don’t meet with the desired result then you can always try the other approach.

In the worst case, if you botch things then you can restore the image and begin again (nothing lost).

Hi,

You can try the following suggestions:

Disable all antivirus and firewalls. Yes, even Microsoft’s.
Reset Windows Update by going to KB 971058 and running the Fixit.
Run the Windows 10 installer again (presumably through Windows Update).
If that doesn’t work, turn your AV and firewall back on, then follow the instructions at KB 947821 to run DISM or the System Update Readiness Tool.
Turn off your AV and firewall, then try installing Win10 again.

Thanks to all for your replies. Gives me a good feeling to have this support. Will try these ideas tomorrow as I have snow to move about the “estate”. Ahh – spring in Michigan.

No Joy. Using Edwin009’s info did the following but not in order. Disabled A/V & F/W.
Forgot to mention had previously run scannow and when finished it said problems found but no fix. So – went to KB 947821 and ran DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth. Result was fixed. Ran scannow again and found no problems.

Went to KB 971058 and ran Fixit. After 4 hours of checking registry files I gave up.
Cancelled but could not close out. Could not close with Task Manager either. Reboot.

Decided to D/L MCT and run from desktop with A/V & F/W disabled. Tried in-place U/G and got same result. Gets to start of install and fails w/80007005 error.

Bruce – I figured that fixing the errors first rather than running MCT was more productive, but maybe not seeing as what the result was.

P/C runs OK for my use right now. Later today or tomorrow I will run Tweak.exe in safe mode and see if that helps.

Finally everything works. 🙂 Ran Tweak.exe (free from Tweaking.com) in safe mode and after two runs through the repairs as they recommend all is well again. First run took 30 minutes and the second 20 minutes.

I’ve upgraded about 50 machines so far, and spend more time preparing for the upgrade than the upgrade itself: Full disk scan, full virus check, all updates, and finally, Windows Repair Tool from Tweaking.com in safe mode.

Great little utility. Hasn’t failed me yet.
