I run Win 8.1 on a desktop with no touchscreen. When I move the mouse cursor over the right margin, the Charms bar, including Search, pops up.

However, if my hand tremor moves the cursor off the bar, the bar disappears, and no amount of mousing brings it back.

I need a way to invoke the search function FROM THE KEYBOARD. I’d prefer not to install one of the Windows 7 interface restoration kits. All I want is a 1-stroke way to get to the search function, first time, every time.

    Thanks.

Have you tried pressing the Windows key whilst on the desktop and then started typing?

This does work in Win 8.0 so apologies in advance if it doesn’t perform the same way in Win 8.1.

It does work in 8.1 as well.

On both the desktop and start screen, Windows key + F brings up the search tab/window (whatever you want to call it).

        Joe, good morning.
It would help this fine gentleman to know that Win-key and F stands for F(ind), FIND. Or is it Files ??? Why is it not W-key and S for Search ???

Maybe this fine fellow is looking for W-key +C for Charms ??? Have a great day. Jean.

Win-F is exactly what I wanted. Thanks to all.

Fine gentleman indeed. I read BYTE religiously, signed up for Compuserve and programmed the interface for entries and corrections to my 5,000-entry record (=LP) database, backed up on 360K floppies. It’s just that I prefer a mouse to fingers and the keyboard to a mouse.

      So get off my lawn!

        krsmav, good morning.

        >>> So get off my lawn! <<<

Will you explain the reason behind this expression ? Like you, I prefer KB clicks to a touch screen and a mouse, but at times we have to revert to them, not the touch though as I do not own one. I like to keep my fingers where they can work ie: type and command, without having to reach for the rodent. Still, I would like to know the reason behind this : So get off my lawn! Have great day. Jean.
