This bug hit me on several machines during my standard settings config. One right after a fresh clean install and the rest on an upgrade (forced) install on what were previously 1803 Pro machines.

In all cases I set Feature deferral to 300 days, and Update deferral to 8 days.  Also in all cases they picked up the June updates exactly 8 days after patch Tuesday.

So from my very limited data set it appears that even though the Update and Feature deferral settings are no longer visible, at least the Update delay is working per my initial settings.

Woody I understand your anguish with MS; as a “oldie” not as savvy with computers as you I too am just totally annoyed with MS and all their “double speak”, not to mention all the inane tomfoolery we have to endure month by month re their ridiculuous Windows Update.  Do MS really have QC/Business Model? Years gone by I was a major customer of Kodak- remember them?  I have the following dumped on my W10 Home …..
Who checks MS? Thanks for all your hard work on behalf of us poor dumb a** MS users.  AlasI feel it’s all getting beyond fair and reasonable.

PS Bangkok is hot and humid and the economy dragging its heels.

Yep, exactly the same disappearing update settings ‘bug’ happened to me after setting the deferral options with a clean install of Windows 10 Professional 1903.

I thought I was imagining things at first until I saw others were having the same issue.

Yes, like others, had the same issue with Win 10 Pro 1903. Made a restore point, tested by selecting non-zero quality and feature update, and both update deferral setting dialog boxes disappeared (believe they disappeared after a reboot). Couldn’t help but wonder how many of us might make deferral changes and then since the dialog boxes disappeared, forget how many days we set them to. Luckily restoring the registry reverted the changes and got my deferral settings back. I am at the point of never trusting the graphical user interface (gui) settings in Windows 10 and relying only on group policy and/or confirming registry settings for anything important. Have not yet been let down by windows updates set by group policy. It is kind of ironic that about 20 years ago many linux distros had issues with gui settings not working properly and the solution to correct these issues would be to use command line. At that time Microsoft supporters would make fun of us linux users having this problem. They felt because Microsoft products were more mature, they rarely experienced this type of issue. Seems the tables have turned and currently I’ve lost trust in the gui settings for Windows 10.

When I check it, it gives me up to 35 days to pause updates. There is no option for either type. It seems to be for both Featured and Cumulative updates. A screen shot is below. I’m out of the Insider program at the moment. So, I wonder why there seems to be inconsistency in Win 10 Pro v.1903. Otherwise, it runs quite well on my machines.

Several of you have noted that, if you specify deferral options as I have here (non-zero numbers in either of the two bottom boxes), the entire “Choose when updates are installed” part of the advanced options dialog disappears.

@abbodi86 has undertaken some experiments with the settings. Here’s what he has concluded:

Yep, the Feature Update deferral box disappears once i change the entries to non-zero.

Maybe it’s an intentional move so the user cannot change the period frequently? 🙂

Anyway, the Feature Update deferral period can be still controlled with registry setting

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings] “DeferFeatureUpdatesPeriodInDays”=dword:0000016d

Group policy can be used to show you the feature update deferral period. The box will show up greyed, but at least you can know the period

Do you know what the DeferFeatureUpdatesPeriodInDays dword:0000016d settings equate to?  Example what is 180 days? 365 days?

@abbodi goes on to say that he tested changing the Quality Update deferral period the same way, with the same result — if you set it to anything other than zero, the whole section disappears.

Do you have the Registry Key that Quality Update deferral period appears under? Do you have dword settings?

just replace the word Feature with Quality, same registry path

This happens on my work PC, a domain joined Windows 10 1809 PC, update KB4497934 (OS Build OS 17763.529).

These settings are being pushed via AD GPO, and that also apparently hides them. When I override them via local GPO, they become un-hidden again, though still grey’d out. It usually takes a gpupdate /force, a reboot, and occasionally even a little time for them to become hidden / un-hidden after enabling / disabling the local GPO.

This all makes me wonder, if some bug exists in 1903, that incorrectly causes them to be hidden as if they were set by an AD GPO, after they are set by the user?

What does everyone think?

Well, I guess there IS an advantage to being a simple Home user and not some high-tech IT guy.  I’ve gone ahead and put Windows 10 ver 1903 on my laptop.  I just checked for the umpteenth time and my “pause updates” button is still there and it give me the option to continue the pause, one week at a time.

btw, I’m using 1903 because I moved back to an older laptop because my newer one wasn’t working properly.  This laptop had Win 8.1 when I re-started it last month.  I decided to try 1903 and it took me three days to update, but here I am, happy as a clam.
