Given the evergrowing $billion gaming industries worldwide, and the time taken to fix this?, I’ll bet the game developers and gamers alike have been more than happy at Woody’s MS-Defcon system.

…And many gamers have uninstalled April update long ago.

yeah, for a timescale reference once discovered, I posted hereon the 15th April with reference to Martin Brinkmann’s Ghacks quick report.

Users should restart their Windows PC every day for the next 24 hours – week in order to receive the fix ?

      • #2360247

Only those with version 2004/20H2 and April CU and NVIDIA GPU and full screen games and two monitors and only today and only if they want it faster.

How to verify if the fix has been installed

This patch is entirely cloud-based so it canโ€™t be verified by comparing the OS version or build numbers. To verify the fix, simply open Registry Editor and navigate to the following location:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\4\1837593227

If youโ€™re able to access the above location and you can see the โ€œEnabledStateโ€ entry with value 1, that means the fix has been applied.

So how can Microsoft update a reg entry on a Windows PC behind users back with no notifications/opt-in ?

        • #2360586

Windows Update has access to the entire registry and file system. It needs to in order to work.

          Dell XPS 13/9310, i5-1135G7/16GB, KDE Neon 6.2
          XPG Xenia 15, i7-9750H/32GB & GTX1660ti, Kubuntu 24.04
Acer Swift Go 14, i5-1335U/16GB, Kubuntu 24.04 (and Win 11)

My Windows GP is set to ‘notify…=2’ and Microsoft should honor that unless I select ‘download’…

              EULA:

“By accepting this agreement, you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice.”

            • #2360687

They don’t send down a patch. I covered this in an article a bit back. When non security fixes are released they leave the original code behind and ship the new code. If there’s an issue they then enable the original code to be rolled back onto the machine. There’s no “patch” because both updates are there already on your system.

        Just checked my Home 20H2.

I haven’t checked for updates since 09 April (for the March updates).ย  But that key looks as if it has been altered.

No double screens, no games.ย  But I have a NVidia GPU.

And I never even noticed MS rummaging around…

        • #2361741

I also see it here, but I only have Intel HD Graphics 4400, i.e integrated on an X1 Carbon 2014

    • #2360556

To check that key easily, open a Command Prompt and enter this command:

      reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\4\1837593227

      cheers, Paul

    • #2360706

then enable the original code to be rolled back onto the machine. Thereโ€™s no โ€œpatchโ€ because both updates are there already on your system.

I know that there was no patch but even the ‘roll back’ should be opt-in to users.
I haven’t installed April updates yet but I do have the reg entry.

      • #2360708

I havenโ€™t installed April updates yet but I do have the reg entry.

So you should appreciate the pre-emptive attention which means you’ll never see the problem. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      So, Microsoft’s Telemetry decided that I am a gamer/use/have :

April CU and NVIDIA GPU and full screen games and two monitors ?
Except for Nvidia GPU I don’t use/have none of the above.

    • #2361226

I, too, like @Alex5723 above, have not yet installed the April patch (KB5001330), but I do indeed have the aforementioned registry key in all its glory with all of the settings exactly as described by @b above.

I DO have a question for @b : Where did you find the exact specs (dual monitor, Nvidia GPU, full screen gameplay, etc.) for those who should have received the KIR treatment? The only spec that I meet that is mentioned in your post above (#2360247) is that I have an Nvidia GPU that’s not exactly bleeding edge, a GTX 1050 Ti with 4 gigs of GDDR5.

      • #2361239

I was only describing my opinion of those who needed to get the fix faster by restarting, based on Microsoft’s details of the issue.

Presumably it’s going out to anyone on 2004/20H2 with an NVIDIA GPU just in case they install the April patch and connect two monitors to play full screen games.

      • #2361743

Based in the reports of that registry key, I think they proactively pushed it out to everyone.

Not on my 2004 W10 Home laptop with metered connection.
I’ve not installed any patches since early last month.

Do you know how the change is pushed?

          cheers, Paul

      Dear All,

Thanks for the continued coverage of this issue in your forums.

However, this issue is not resolved and does affect more systems that only have single monitors. AMD GPUs are also impacted. Games on my system that used to run smoothly just yesterday now run slowly after installing the update.

The KIR is installed and shows the expected result from the following article:

      https://www.windowslatest.com/2021/05/01/verify-fix-for-windows-10-april-patch-tuesday-performance-issues/

I have dual Nvidia GPUs in NVLink and use dual monitors (but not while gaming).

I think it is outrageous that Microsoft do not more thoroughly test updates on systems with high performance AMD and Nvidia GPUs with the latest vendor driver installed. Iโ€™m not asking for them to have many high-performance systems on hand to test; just a minimum of two systems; one with an AMD GPU, the other Nvidia. Not all systems can be accurately simulated by the vast volumes of Azure virtual machine they use to test monthly updates.ย  Last month it was printers they caused issues with; this month its GPUs and games. What next?

I took the advice of โ€œsedmisonโ€ (Graphics Engineer from the Windows Graphics team) from the second Reddit thread linked to below and submitted a recording of the issue via the Feedback hub.

Some posters in the Reddit threads indicate that insider builds of 21H1 resolve these issues so there is reason for optimism.

      Thanks again.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I have not found a workaround yet but the July 2021 update, namely kb5004237 when installed boosted performance by 20%. I am using Windows 10 Pro for Workstations version 21H1 64 bit.

The performance isn’t back to what it was but since this is an old game (Far Cry 2 from 2008) I believe there is another issue causing it which I am trying to narrow down.

I was initially using Nvidia driver version 460.89 but upgraded to 471.11. The performance difference was negligible. My system has an Intel Core i9 7980XE at 2.6 GHz, 64 GB of DDR4 RAM and 2x Nvidia Titan RTX (with an NVLink bridge). With NVLink disabled the game gives better performance.

It’s silly my old PC from 2010 (Intel Core i7 980X (6 core), 12 GB DDR3 and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 (Nvidia driver: 466.11) is getting 8 times the performance of my current system with Far Cry 2. I measured the differences using the builtin benchmarks of Far Cry 2.

Other games such as Crysis (2007) and Crysis Warhead (2008) are unaffected and give amazing and super smooth performance. I’ll keep trying to narrow down this issue.

I believe Microsoft have resolved this performance issue they introduced inadvertently in March 2021. The remaining issue is specific to me.

Thanks for your interest and I’ll keep you informed.
