System: Windows 10 Home version 1903

I sent my laptop back to HP for a hardware repair under warranty. The case had cracked & hinge had broken. Got it back today. When I sent the laptop to HP it had Windows 10 version 1909. Unfortunately HP wiped the drive. Now it has Win version 1903. When I run Windows Update the message is that Windows is up to date. But I am still at 1903 & version 1909 is never offered.
I tried the following: Settings –> Activation –> Change product key & input the product key I had when the laptop was purchased from Best Buy. Ran Windows update again & still it says that Windows is up to date & I am still at 1903.

So how do I get version 1909?
And at this point I think I would rather stick with 1909 rather than upgrade to 20xx – do you agree?

You can use the TargetReleaseVersion setting to designate which version of Windows you want to upgrade to or stay on. AKB2000016 Guide to Windows Update Settings discusses how to use TRV.

If you have Win10 Home, see Section 2. You will need to make two Registry changes either manually or using the two commands.

If you have Win10 Pro, Section 3 and 5 (the settings will be the same as v2004) to set the values. Or, you can use the commands in Section 3.

Hey boss —  followed the instructions, made the 2 registry changes, reboot, run windows update.  Unfortunately 1909 not offered.  Does this mean that I can no longer get 1909?

What is the current AskWoody advice on upgrading to version 20xx?????

Right now, v1909 is the one recommended.

Did you verify that the Registry changes were in place?
Did you reboot the computer for the Registry changes to take effect?
Don’t click “Check for Updates.” That doesn’t mean “Check,” it means download and install anything that’s out there.
Wait for v1909 to be offered through Windows Update (if the Reg entries are in place).

Do you have Home or Pro.
Are you using any Pause, metered connections, or any third-party update blockers?
What are your other settings for Windows Update?
        Are you using wushowhide?

Regedit – I verified the registry are in place.

My system is Windows 10 Home  (sorry, I should have mentioned this earlier)

I have not paused the updates.

Not sure what you mean by “Wait for v1909 to be offered through Windows Update”.  Do you mean I should NOT pause the updates & just wait for Windows Update to run on its own and offer 1909?

Thank you so much for the help!!!!

If you Pause updates, you are telling Windows Update to NOT show you anything for the pause number of days.
Have you done Dec updates? The reason I ask is because, if you “resume updates” from Pause it will download/install anything that is available. If you have no pause set, just wait for WU to offer you 1909.

Actually, to update 1903 to 1909, you only need to install the 1909 Enablement Package (KB4517245)

From Microsoft’s article about this page:

Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 share a common core operating system with an identical set of system files. Therefore, the new features in Windows 10, version 1909 were included in the latest monthly quality update for Windows 10, version 1903 (released October 8, 2019), but are in an inactive and dormant state. These new features will remain dormant until they are turned on through the “enablement package,” a small, quick-to-install “master switch” that activates the Windows 10, version 1909 features.

Microsoft removed the reference to the KB from their catalog back when 2004 was activated but fortunately the “direct links” still work.

      The KB requires the following:

      • Windows 10 1903 Servicing stack update September 24, 2019 or a later
Cumulative Update for Windows 10 dated October 8, 2019 or a later

Note: the downloaded KB file is a cab not a msu and you’ll need to use the follwoing DISM command to install it.

      • DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:”Full path of .cab file

I just recently did this for my cousin’s PC which was also on Windows 10 Home 1903 and it was very simple.

Downloaded the x64 KB from the above link.

      Ran the DISM command.

Rebooted his PC and winver showed it was Windows 10 1909.
