I have my system update set on pause and extended as far out as I can go, did this several weeks ago trying to avoid copilot. In today’s newsletter, Susan recommended downloading and running a patch hiding utility from Microsoft. I downloaded it and ran it but the tool indicated there weren’t any patches to hide. The last time I allowed any patches to be installed was September 14th when I turned on this new laptop for the first time so I know there are patches out there that haven’t been installed since the 14th of September.

Not sure at this point how I will be able to block or hide any patches once the pause period expires. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you have paused or deferred you won’t see any updates.
Un pause/defer and run WUmgr to see the list of updates. You can block any you want until you are ready to install.

Thank you for responding. When take away the pause won’t the system start downloading and installing immediately? Or will I be given time to hide the ones I don’t want?

        • #2596501

Yes, releasing the Pause will initiate an immediate download/install. You can set Metered Connections before doing so and it may keep the updates from downloading.

I did as suggested by the updater produced an error. The error number is 0x80070005. So I assume the updater is broken. My old laptop using Windows 10 needed the assistance of a KB patch that caused the updater to work and get me on the latest level of 10. Have they made one for 11? Again any suggestions are appreciated.

    • #2596560

      Which update caused the error?
How did you get the updates to run?
      Did you hide any updates?

      cheers, Paul

    • #2596615

Once I took the pause off and clicked the resume button the updater tried to download but errored presenting me with ox80070005. So I wasn’t able to get any updates to hide. The only updates that I have had installed go back to September 14th when I turned on this brand-new laptop. By default, this laptop came with the updater set at pause for 1 week. I just kept adding a week till I couldn’t add any more weeks while I set this unit up with various pieces of software. I’m a retired person who uses the computer for personal needs.  Everything that is installed appears to run perfectly and doesn’t appear to have any bugs from one piece of software affecting another piece of software. The only problem that I can see is that any updates for Windows have been shut off.

Download WuMgr and use it to check for updates – the round arrows. What does it show?

      cheers, Paul

      • #2596808

When I do a search for WuMgr it suggests Major Geeks website. Is this correct? Or should I look for WuMgr somewhere else?

        • #2596815

This is the developer’s website on GitHub. Click on Release 1.1 Latest on the right.

Thanks for the help. Downloaded and ran the software. Did two screenshots which are attached. Also, poked into the services.msc and Windows Updater is set at manual, is this correct? I never touched it before. When I ran WuMgr is presented screen one so I clicked yes then screen 2 popped. When I check on what updates have been installed it shows a few that took place when I turned on the unit the first time which was September 14th.

            • #2596832

Yes. the Windows Update Service on Manual.

            • #2596838

There are instructions on how to use WUMgr on this site. Read them and ask questions so you know how to set it before you start. How to hide updates you don’t want, how to scan, how to choose the updates you want to install and install them. Look on the Tools Forum for instructions to start.

              Information you need to know:
Windows Update and WUMgr both use Windows Update Service to scan for updates. If you Pause updates in Windows Update it disables the Windows Update Service, so WUMgr will not be able to scan for updates either. So, if you are going to use WUMgr, you don’t want to use Pause also b/c WUMgr won’t work.

Thank you, sounds a great tool. I will read the directions then turn off the pause. Thanks again for your time and assistance.

I have taken Windows Update off Pause. Ran WuMgr.EXE which produced what is shown in Screen 1 which was attached yesterday, see above. It produced a window that said, “Windows Update service not available, try to start it.  Yes or No

I pressed yes and it produced Screen 2. In screen 2 it said, “Cannot start service WUAUSERV on computer” The error number is 0x8007041D.

Screen 3 which I have attached shows that my system is not on pause but produces the same error number when I run check for updates.

I assume this indicates that Windows update is broken and can not run

    • #2596965

Yes, Windows Update is broken. See if Fix 0x8007041D Error in Windows 11/10 (thewindowsclub.com) helps.

Or reinstall over the top – works on W11 too.
Got a misbehaving Windows 10? reinstall

Your link took me to the website, I downloaded the file and installed it. The program ran and listed over a thousand problems and offered to fix it if I signed up for their premium service. I’m not going to pay. I see other people having the same issue as myself. Being retired I’m not worried about being hacked so I’m going to proceed as before and wait till Microsoft comes out with a fix. Everything works perfectly and I have an image of my Drive C if needed. Thanks again for your time and suggestions, I think we can close this issue and you can move on helping other people.

No one suggested downloading a file.

“Download PC Repair Tool” is an ad link.

Did you try these at the top of that article?

If you’re not able to install a Windows update due to the [0x8007041D] error message, use these fixes:

        1. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter a couple of times and see if it helps.
        2. Run the DISM tool to repair system inconsistencies and corruption.
        3. Delete the Software Distribution folder. The SoftwareDistribution folder temporarily stores files that are required to install updates on a Windows PC. You may delete this folder if Windows Updates are not working properly or not working at all on your Windows 11/10 PC. Once you do this, try running the update again.
        4. Run Windows Update in Clean Boot State. Clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that may cause issues while installing the update.
        5. Perform an automatic repair using the Media Creation Tool.

I downloaded the file and installed it

The article describes downloading a Windows ISO from Microsoft.
      Mounting the ISO.
Running setup.exe from the mounted ISO.

I bought the computer from Costco. They provide free service for two years. I contacted their service department and spent two hours running the various suggested tests that you provided along with additional tests they provided. Nothing came up as to what is causing the problem with the updater. They finally came to the end of their list of suggestions and recommended that I do a “Factory Reset”. Which I don’t want to do because it has taken me days to get all of my software installed and configured the way I want it.

As I said earlier I have noticed other people posting on the forum where they are dealing with this same issue caused by Ox8007041D. Even Susan mentioned it this week in her section of the newsletter. This appears to be a Microsoft problem and I think a fix will come out shortly saving me weeks of additional work. My unit is running perfectly so I’m willing to run the risk of an invasion till a fix is provided.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me with this problem, I really appreciate it.

        Where?

Even Susan mentioned it this week in her section of the newsletter.

        I don’t think so.

Don’t believe I saw it up there –

      to use WuMgr:
install it, (latest is “v1.1b”. been out for quite a while.)
      execute it,
see 2 tabs: options, auto update,
      select tab auto update,
      choose “disable automatic update”.
It will tell you you have to reboot.
      Reboot.
NOW, windows update is disabled and all things run through WuMgr.(except MS Defender A/V updates.)
Execute WuMgr (I have it pinned to my taskbar),
Click on the search (double curved arrow) (leftmost) icon.
It will think for a minute and then display available updates.
      hth.

      • #2597471

Thank you for your input. Sounds like a nice piece of software however if your updater doesn’t work neither will this.

        • #2597487

It doesn’t disable the Windows Update Service. It has to use the Windows Update Service to search for updates.
It just disables the GUI in the Settings App.

          • #2597491

My system has not been updated since September 14th. When the updater runs it produces an error. When I run WuMgr it produces the same error message Ox8007041D and doesn’t show any updates available even though Microsoft has released the October updates. So this indicates to me that the update service is broken. I have tried numerous troubleshooting routines and nothing is shown to be the problem. I’m leaving tomorrow for our winter home and once there I will run the Windows 11 22h2 ISO in repair mode to see if that fixes the problem.

    • #2597399

install it, (latest is “v1.1b”. been out for quite a while.)

      WUmgr is portable app.

    • #2597559

WuMgr it produces the same error message Ox8007041D

This shows that the issue is with the Windows Update service.
The easiest fix is to “install over the top”, not repair.

      cheers, Paul

      • #2597602

Thanks Paul, over the top, got it. Thank you everyone who responded with suggestion, I appreciate it.

        • #2601995

Could someone please explain the “Over the Top” install/repair process? I have the 22H2 ISO file but I’m not comfortable jumping in without my lifejacket.
