Trying to use Win 7 Backup for the first time. Set up seems normal. I’m trying to backup to an external hard disk which has 1.77 TB of free space (2 TB drive). Trying to backup C: drive which has ~740 GB in use. No matter how small the folder is that I select to backup, I always get the “Not enough space on the disk” error (code: 0x80070070). Not much hair left to tear out. Any help appreciated.

      Hello, and welcome!

Just as an exercise, try creating a 1 TB NTFS partition on the external hard drive, and see what happens with Windows 7 Backup. (Your external hard drive is formatted as NTFS, isn’t it?!)

I use Win 7 Pro Backup on several ‘file servers’ to back up to external hard drives (bought as “2 TB” drives) on a weekly basis using a BATch file, and it works fine. (Admittedly the C: drive space used is closer to 30 GB than 740 GB!)

      BATcher

Plethora means a lot to me.

Tried shrinking the existing partition to 931 GB and creating a new 931 GB partition. Same error message when trying to backup only a small folder on C: to the new volume. Yes, both volumes on the drive are NTFS. Any other hints?

The issue may be a lack of space on C: for the snapshot process.
Try one of the free backup programs to confirm (Aomei Backupper, Macrium Reflect, EaseUS ToDo, etc).

      cheers, Paul

Could you be a bit more specific please. I’ve turned off the ‘create mirror’ option, and I’m only trying to backup one small folder. There is more than 1 TB of free space on C:. Thanks.

If I remember correctly this can be caused by not enough contiguous free space in the hidden system partition and the resolution was to assign a drive letter to it and then defragment it.

      Try at your own risk!
