Help … I apologize for my ignorance, but  I’m completely new to Windows 10 (I have Pro) and have recently set up a new laptop.

    I followed PKCano’s instructions (https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/2000016-guide-for-windows-update-settings-for-windows-10/) for deferring/managing updates … so I set the following in Local Group Policy Editor>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Update:

Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled, set to “2” – Notify for download and auto install

Windows Update for Business>Select when Preview Builds and Feature Updates are received: Enabled, st to Semi-Annual Channel, 180 days

Windows Update for Business>Select when Quality Updates are received: Not configured

    Manage Preview Builds: Disabled

Select the Target Feature Update version: Enabled, set to 2004

    ***

Then, today, I followed Susan Bradley’s instructions for pausing the February 9 “Patch Tuesday” updates until a specific day in February a few weeks from now.  To do so, I turned metered connection on and went to Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update> Advanced Options > Pause Updates and selected the date I wanted from the pull-down menu.

    ***

So far, so good.  Then, seeing various recommendations to download WuMgr for the purpose of being able to show/hide and choose which updates to (eventually) install, I downloaded that ZIP from GitHub and extracted it.

    ***

My problem now is that I notice that “Windows Update” is no longer an option under Settings> Update & Security.  The left-side menu now starts with “Delivery Optimization.”

Where did “Windows Update” go?  It was there, right at the top before “Delivery Optimization” when I went to Pause Updates as per Susan’s instructions, but now it’s gone … along with the entire corresponding right side of that screen (which, as I can see from referring to Susan’s YouTube video, includes a “Check for Updates” button at the top, then “Optional updates available” (with a “Download and Install” link), and several clickable options (“Pause updates for 7 days,” “Change active hours,” “View update history,” and “Advanced Options”).  All of that is now missing.

Is this expected behavior based on anything I did as described above?

If not, what should/can I do to get it back?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ah!  Okay!  I see that there’s a checked (and grayed out) “Hide WU Settings Page” option under the “Auto Update” tab in WuMgr … but the only way to uncheck it is to click “Automatic Update (default)”?

Do I want to do this?  I’m a little unclear as to what selecting “Automatic Update” will actually do?

Any clarification from someone who understands WuMgr would be very much appreciated.  🙂

It seems to me you are trying to use multiple methods to do the same thing and they are conflicting with each other. I would recommend you use one method or the other. Either use WUMgr OR Group Policy to control updates.

If you use WUMgr, you need to go through all the settings so that you know what what the software is doing. There is information on WUMger here and here.

If you use AKB2000016, you should read and follow the instructions, not use every possible setting. With Win10 Pro using Group Policy, for example, it says if you use TRV to control version (Feature Update choice), you should set Feature Deferral to 0 or 1 (This is NOT the same as Quality Deferral). If you are using Deferrals to control versions (Feature Updates), you don’t use TRV (there is a link to Microsoft documentation that explains why).
It also explains the use (or non-use) of Pause, and the implications of “Resume Updates.”

If you use Susan’s method, then you should stick to Susan’s instructions.

But combining methods can lead to unexpected consequences so you don’t have any idea of what controls are actually in place.

        Hello, PKCano!

I actually did read AKB2000016 many times (and thank you so, SO much for writing that and trying to help me and others), and I really did try to understand and follow it.  🙂 But clearly, I’m not grasping every aspect as well as I’d hoped.

For example, I DID see instructions that said not to use both “Feature Deferrals” and “TRZ.”  But I’m not sure exactly which settings you are including when you write “Feature Deferral” ?

By “Feature Deferral,” are you are referring specifically to “Select when Preview Builds and Feature Updates are received” *and* “Select when Quality Updates are received” (?)

Or are you only referring to “Select when Preview Builds and Feature Updates are received”?

Or are you referring to something else altogether?

If you’re referring to “Select when Preview Builds and Feature Updates are received” and “Select when Quality Updates are received” (or both), my next problem is that I don’t see how I can BOTH leave these as “Not Configured” AND “set Feature Deferral to 0 or 1.”

On my machine, if I leave either of these two settings as “Not Configured,” I don’t have the option on its respective pages to set any deferral at all (much less “0” or “1”).

Also, you wrote to set these to “0” or “1” as they “will be ignored anyway” (if TRZ is set, which it is on my machine).  If they will be ignored, why does it matter what they’re set to?

I’m sorry to be slow and confused — please bear with me; I really appreciate the help!

There is a screenshot of this below the text at #2275043, second screenshot.
If you use AKB2000016 as a guide, when using TRV to control Feature Updates the designated version number controls which version you want. If you are using Feature Update deferrals to control the version you want, you are specifying how many days after it is released to install it.
But if you use TRV, that will prevail and whatever you put in deferrals will be ignored. So you are really not using both. If you use TRV, you should set the Feature Update deferral exactly as shown in the screenshot, ***but set the deferral says to 0 or 1 instead of 365 (which may prevent getting non-security CU Preview between Patch Tuesdays).

Ah! The light breaks! And I see the reason for at least some of my confusion.

I HAD previously read (in Section 5 of AKB2000016) about referring to the second screenshot of #2270453, and had studied that screenshot and been confused.  In case it helps anyone else who was similarly bewildered, the reason for my confusion is that the text in Section 5 of AKB 2000016 that pointed me to the screenshot says:

“If you use TargetReleaseVersion, you should also set deferrals to 0 0r 1. ********as shown in******** (my emphasis) the second screenshot in #2275043. They are going to be ignored anyway.”

But in contradiction of the above language, the deferral in the second screenshot in #2275043 ISN’T set to 0 or 1, but to 365 … so I assumed I had to be looking at the wrong screen shot!  🙂  Now I understand that the “365” in the screen shot is meant to be “0” or “1.”

I have set that deferral accordingly.

Thank you so much for helping me with this!

Slight change in verbage. See if that helps.

              PKCano,

Out of interest, if, as it says in the Microsoft article , “When you specify target version policy, feature update deferrals will not be in effect”, why does it matter if you set the deferral to 0 or 1 or 365 days?

everytime Wumgr is launched, the “Hide WU Settings Page” option is always checked by default and it must be UNchecked to restore the Windows Update option in the Update & Security section of the Win10 Settings window

this is expected behavior (aka. behavior by design) of Wumgr

I don’t have that issue on mine, it’s always unselected.

In case it helps someone, this worked for me:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
      Registry Key = SettingsPageVisibility

      was set to hide:windowsupdate

I deleted this key, restarted the pc and Windows Update is now showing properly.
