Windows version on desktop

In some builds the version shows and some it has not. I have seen a couple ways to control that, but none seem to work.

Is there a way to “paint” (or not) the version and build on the desktop?

Use the Sysinternals utility BgInfo. Download the ZIP file and expand it to something like C:Support. Run BgInfo and accept the EULA.

Unfortunately ‘version’ can be a confusing term these days so you may need a custom .BGI file grabbing OS ‘version’, internal ‘release ID’ and ‘build’ from the registry.

I’ve attached a custom .BGI file that shows this info. The forum doesn’t allow the attachment in ‘native’ format so I’ve had to attach it as win10.bgi.txt.

Download it to the same folder as BgInfo, rename it from win10.bgi.txt to win10.bgi then drag the win10.bgi file over the BgInfo executable (or use File > Open). Click Preview to see how it will look then Apply when you’re happy.

Note that this will be, by default, a static bitmap. If you want it to update dynamically/automatically then you need to create a shortcut to BgInfo (with the .BGI file as an argument) in either the RUN key for Current User or Machine OR in the startup folder for either the current user or all users. However, I’m not confident this will work as Win 10 updates seem to have a habit of wiping out personal settings and reverting to MS-preferred settings.
