Word 2010 64-bit crashing on index with Reference Document

Hi all
I have a fairly complex set of Word documents:
1. A number of Word documents with XE fields
2. An ‘index’ document that uses RD (Reference Document) tags to include the other docs, then an INDEX field to build the index.
This has worked for years (since Word 95), including on my new machine with Word 2010 64-bit, but over the last couple of months it now totally crashes at even the simplest example.
I’ve uninstalled Office, and then re-installed.
Does this crash for anyone else, or is it just me?
Any ideas how I get around it?

Do you have access to a 32-bit Office 2010 to test?

Microsoft recommends that you not use 64-bit Office 2010 unless you have a specific reason (i.e. very large spreadsheets). The main issue is that most Office addins have not been upgraded to 64-bit.

I’ve uninstalled 64-bit, and installed 32-bit Office, but still have the same problem.
I’ve got 32-bit Office installed on my laptop, and it works OK with the documents as well.
So I know that the problem is this machine.
But:
1. It used to work
2. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed Office
But the problem remains.
I’m not convinced that uninstalling removes everything (when I reinstall, my modifications to the Quick-Launch bar and the MRU are all restored).
Perhaps if I could _really_ uninstall it all it might help.
I also remember that I did install the Microsoft Labs’ ‘Ribbon Hero’, but I did manually excise that from the Add-ins.
Any other ideas of what I could try?

Have you tried with the .docx file type?

Have you checked the application event log?
