AskWoody PlusMarch 13, 2025 at 10:49 am #2755536Using WuMgr I hid a cumulative preview, but tried to install KB2267602 & KB5053602.I’ve never had a WuMgr update/install fail before.ย ย The log just kept scrolling & scrolling, for 3 minutes, as it was populated (see attached video).ย ย ย Additionally, I was getting an Install fail on KB2267602 on the screenshot below, but it installed fine today.ย KB5053602 is still failing today.I am running InCtrl & holding at 11, 23H2.ย ย I’ve noticed that the Setting, Windows Update button not to respond to a click.ย ย Could that be due to running InCtrl?Viewing 16 reply threadsAuthorReplies-

AskWoody MVPMarch 13, 2025 at 2:34 pm #2755574Had much the same blip when updating W11 23H2 earlier today, WUMgr failed to download/ install the CU.
I ended up using the proprietary OS WU to restart/ finish off the update.
All good now with incontrol still anchoring the feature version at 23H2.I’ll bet the hidden Preview CU was from January 2025..
something not right there IMO, by that I mean the Preview once released/ unhidden STILL reappears after a WUMgr refresh only to be hidden again!
Usually, previews drop off after the following months installation of the SMQR CU.
That one is stuck in limbo (hasn’t installed nor disappeared after MARCH 2025 CU)Windows - commercial by definition and now function...1 user thanked author for this post.

?
Explain…
Also, doย you ever use the other options or just the default, Windows Update?

By proprietary OS WU, I’m pretty sure @Microfix means plain old Windows Update itself without any other program’s help.
In other words, I’m pretty sure that @Microfix used Windows’ own, built-in, Windows Update to finish the job of installing this month’s update from Microsoft, without accessing Windows Update from within another program’s interface such as WUMgr’s.
I hope this helps clarify things a bit for you.ย ๐

Thanks for confirming what I suspected.ย ย I learned the hard way decades ago never toย assume anything with PCs, so I question/confirm everything.
I was just curious about the qualifier, “proprietary”, which leads into another issue I’m having on 23H2: my Windows Update button click does not check for updates any more.ย I thought it might have been a side-effect of using InCtrl & holding at 11, 23H2.ย ย ย ย I thought it may have been the Win Update service process problem, but if it was then from what I’ve read WuMgr wouldn’t work…..???

ManagerMarch 14, 2025 at 9:29 am #2755696Did WUMgr turn off that button because you are using WUMgr to control Windows Update?
That button is NOT “Check” for updates. If you click on that button it results in an immediate download/install, which would negate WUMgr control. Choose the one you want to use for control and use IT (singular).ย ๐

I remember from one of your other posts last year; I just tried the button again after the WuMgr KB5053602ย download/install fail.

Well, since WuMgr will not download KB5053602 and my Check for Updates button doesn’t work, what, in your opinion,ย are the safest options for downloading?
I checked this out before posting, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/march-11-2025-kb5053602-os-builds-22621-5039-and-22631-5039-19284fef-ba57-440b-a027-2d5eeecb73fa

AskWoody PlusMarch 14, 2025 at 12:47 pm #2755727On the Microsoft page that you linked to, scroll down to the section “How to get this update”. Then, under “Install this Update”, select “Catalog” and click on the result where it says “go to Microsoft Update Catalog”. Once you’re on the Catalog page for your update, select the version of the update that’s for your Windows version and computer architecture (probably the second from the bottom).

I see the version for my setup (A below), but the size does not match the enormous 128.1GB size listed in WUMgr (B below).ย ย ย ย The web download is realistic!
This is concerning since WUMgr is obviously in error for some reason.ย ย Given that my Windows Update button under settings does not work (yes, I remember @PKCano’s advice) & the first ever WUMgr fail, I wonder if my Window Version is corrupted or there is something wrong with the update service.

Use the MS catalog for now if you wish to update (as per your ‘tried’ first post alludes to)
Download the update for 23H2 and either install now or later..
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=5053602As for WUMgr, that’s the first time it’s EVER failed here although using the proprietary Operating System Windows Update worked without issue.
FYI; WUMgr is ‘as is’ when used by default, no user changes invoked.

It’s a great app & I do not mean to imply any criticism.ย ย ย As a C# .Net developer myself, I know a lot of anomalies like this are data driven.
With that said, my OS WU button stopped working.ย ย Per @PKCano’s advice, I chose to stick with WUMgr.ย ย ย But, I can’t help but wonder if this is a symptom of a problem with my Window’s install.ย ย ย I am holding off on this KB update, respecting @SB’s master patch list, as of this writing.

AskWoody MVPMarch 14, 2025 at 2:43 pm #2755762As a matter of interest, is the PC a branded device or custom built?
(just need to ascertain whether it’s brand specific, as my Asus PC did not mirror the same errant WUMgr behaviour and the preview is not in the Hidden list and has not been installed) Metadata issue?Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

Gave up on that problem KB….would never install….
Curious, what do you do when a KB isn’t on the MPL?ย ย Wait?ย ย That’s my plan….
Also, my hidden list is getting long…..

AskWoody PlusApril 10, 2025 at 6:34 pm #2762157You have .NET 8. Why, I don’t know, but you must have installed it. I’d patch after backing up.
Who cares about the hidden list? Hidden = do not install and there should only ever be drivers, firmware and previews in there.
cheers, Paul
No, not yet, but an application I use suggests it….
