Does XP dialup networking have a setting similar to the 95 “log in to network” check box? When one of our departments dials out and connects with the other bank system our own network printing and TCP/IP based apps such as Outlook and our mainframe drop. When the dialup connection is terminated (as I understand it) the network functions return without a shutdown restart although I may be wrong on this.

If anyone can point me in the right direction or confirm that this is the “nature of the beast” as one lan guy put it I would appreciate it.

Jester, It is the way the bank system being connected to is configured. They probably don’t want to take a chance on having an open network connection (to your network) that they don’t know about.

This is probably a problem with the default routes on the client PCs. When the dial up connection is established it creates a default route via that connection, so the traffic intended for your local servers gets sent down the dial up line.

Depending on your exact network configuration you may be able to use ROUTE ADD commands to get this to work correctly.

To work out the exact ROUTE ADD commands required, we would need to know…
Are your clients getting their IP configuration from a DHCP server?
IP Address range that the client PCs use
IP Addresses of the servers you connect to
IP Address of the default gateway that the client PCs normally use
IP Address that you get on the dial up connection

        Thanks.

We are using DHCP internally but we could request a static IP.

I will look into this further and prompt the real gurus to check as well.

Thanks again everyone for the pointed questions and suggestions.
