After a month it started doing memory dumps at shutdown. Started doing Scan Disk at startup lately too! It did not let me escape from either.

The power supply and hard drive are less than a year old! I disabled the internet most of the time now as I have a Windows 7 machine for that. I have also added MalewareBytes Anti-Exploit.

Seems like it has either been invaded or M$ is killing it for me!

If you have any ideas of how to fix this stuff please let me know.

    Thanks all

    Ted

Yes, definite ideas: full format and clean install.
Then make certain you have made a drive image.

That would involve downloading all of those UPDATES no longer available wouldn’t it?

I have tried creating a new Page File by changing it to zero, rebooting and then back to 3000 mb for 2 G of memory.
(memory * 1.5 according to M$) So far so good…

All updates that have been issued are still available, at least for now, and probably for a couple of years. There just aren’t going to be more updates going forward.

I would suggest using Belarc Advisor for keeping track of MS updates, patches, bandaids etc.

All required security hotfixes (using the 06/10/2014 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) have been installed.

Yes, I have checked it with Belarc Advisor for years now. I’m running XP Pro on the machine acting up.

Meanwhile my Windows 7 machine seems to have a USB problem. After running a few days, the USB devices quit working properly. I even lost the mouse once.

Downloading your Chipset/Video drivers should sort that – but if it’s AMD, the latest Win 7 Video drivers could give you a pink hue.

If that’s the case but it resolves the USB problem and you are unable to remove the hue from the greyscale in CCC, you can roll back the driver which will leave your USB ports okay but will get rid of the hue – although you may need to troubleshoot any devices in Devices and Printers for Windows to find any drivers for you.

        burger2227,
Check to see if you have installed MS patch 2862330. The wonderful Susan Bradley reports that it is the source of ongoing USB issues and has been for a while. It is in her WinPatches chart with a HOLD status. It affected my Win7 ‘puter for a while (drove me absolutely crazy trying to fix until I found out about patch) so I loaded a previous image and it vanished along with USB problems. Hope that helps. – Brian (Australia).

I found some chipsets, but half were not the right ones at Dell. I got one to update 2 different ways…

They don’t have anything for USB specifically except USB3 which I don’t have.

    • #1457710

The Chipset drivers will include those for the USB ports when there aren’t any listed separately.

    • #1457715

KB2862330 is listed as installed. I’ve not had any blue screen problems. Just USB device problems.

I tried to view a camera with a video converter called Easy Cap, but the video kept blinking and triggering the software motion alert which sent an email every time. I tried reconnecting it and it quit working altogether so I tried it in my XP without a problem. When I moved the mouse transceiver to another USB port, it quit working too.

Back to the XP machine, I’m going to assume the worst and try to fix the Registry!
I tried a couple of Registry fixers and will let you know how that works out. One found over 2,000 errors.
It automatically saves all changes so that I can restore it in case I run into problems.

        burger,
Mate, you’ll be wasting your (I assume) valuable time playing with registry and all these other time-sucking activities. What you are experiencing is exactly what I went through. You won’t find peace until you uninstall that KB2862330 patch or recover with a recent image. You do create regular images I assume?!. If you don’t START TODAY and you will have 99.9% less drama when PC goes belly up. Speaking from MUCH experience being SAVED by a recent disk image. Nothing like it in the world to be able to revert to a perfect PC in 5 mins!!!
Stop wasting time and uninstall the patch. Then get on with more enjoyable things . . . good luck, cheers, Brian.

I’m not ready to declare the patch as a problem as I have not experienced any blue screens, just one incident of my USB ports not working correctly.

As to the XP problem, I checked the Scheduler and it did not have Check Disk scheduled, but it did have those WARNINGS for XP expiration so I removed them. That blasted MSE red box of danger is a pain in the ars! So far no memory problems, we shall see.

          • #1458079

Well Scan Disk is still running on about half of the boot ups. Disk checking software is not finding any problems either. I’m getting more tempted to put the original hard drive back in! Supposedly it was going bad according to Acronis, but after I installed a new WD hard drive apparently a MIRACLE happened and BOTH drives were AOK. Incidentally Acronis also supplied the WD cloning software. Conspiracy?

I checked the Registry and the Scan Disk boot setting is OK too. The disk was just defragged too even though it did not need it.

After almost nine years, of downloading, installing and uninstalling a g’zillion programs, my XP PC was really messed up.

Then it started dropping BSOD’s randomly. I found out that the BSOD’s were being caused by the bulging and leaking Capacitors on the mother-board.

Being a Board-Level electronics repair tech, I took out the mobo, ordered new caps from “badcaps(dot)net” and when they arrived I did the cap replacement.
XP ran better with the repaired mobo, but I still wanted a Clean Install. I finally found my XP install disk, dusted it off, and proceeded to do a Fresh, Clean re-install of XP-Pro-SP3. (I had slipstreamed SP3 into the install, years ago)

After restoring my saved data files and reinstalling my most valuable programs, XP is running like a scalded dog.
No more BSOD’s, and no other misc. problems. I had turned off Auto Updates several years ago, when those updates were causing problems.
So that’s no longer an issue. I don’t use I.E. and I run a comprehensive package of Security Software, so my PC runs fast and safe.

I guess that would have to be my own recommendation, to anyone with an old install of XP that’s causing them problems.
Forget all the scanners and Fixers, just re-install XP and be done with the problems.

        Cheers Mates!

PS Pitstop is crap! First it tells me about Mozilla and Neptune browsers, but doesn’t say anything about Chrome. So I use IE, sign in AGAIN and then it keeps trying to run an Active X component. Then it stops doing anything. FORGET THAT!

See if Dell PC Diagnostics will find anything – much better and safer than registry cleaners or tune up programs.

If that cleaner found 2,000 registry errors, then open a command prompt (as an administrator on Win 7) and run a chkdsk /f and I would only trust CCleaner if I were to check the registry.

Ihave used “eusing registry cleaner”, recommended by Windows Secrets, for years without any problems. Its actions are conservative, and I use it to prevent reg bloating caused by “session orphans”.It is great for cleaning such debris from the reg of a PC that has never had such purging.

A friend with an eight year old Sony Vaio complained about sluggishness so I ran itm and it identified 7000+ orphan issues. After using it the machine ran better and had no problems caused by the cleaning. I also use CCC, just those two reg tools.

Does anyone have a link to where XP SP3 can ‘still’ be downloaded after a full format and clean install is done?

    • #1457758

Yes I checked at Dell and ran the diagnostics which found nothing wrong. I did find an Intel chipset to update and after I did that CheckDisk ran on reboot. That is what has been happening more often lately. Not memory dumps.

I figure if I have to format and reinstall I may as well try to fix it instead. Nothing to lose except time and I have lots of that! I also still have the original XP hard drive that I cloned to a bigger 250G drive last year. Maybe I’ll learn something!

If you run chkdsk without any parameters, it will report if it’s found any bad sectors and advise next command which will be a chkdsk /r if it has.

If this is the case, then back up any personal files before running it as data can be lost when it moves data to the good sectors.

Time, and abuse, can turn any OS into a Monster.

I was given a perfectly good Laptop, because it was so slow as to be utterly painful to operate. This lady’s friend told her that the motherboard was bad!
        Oh really?

Well after trying to clean it up for several hours, I finally just gave up, reformatted the HD and reinstalled XP-Pro-SP3. That little Lappy ran just great!
There was NO hardware problem at all.
Today the same little PC is running Windows 8.1 Ultimate/32. Still running great!

The root cause of the original problem was a user that did NO maintenance on her PC for several years, and had NO AV or AS software installed. That poor little PC was just so corrupted that it could barely even run. It’s in Good Hands now and in spite of the fact that it’s nine years old, it still runs great.

        Cheers Mates!

Yes, Microsoft Update will supply you with updates to XP and MSE, just make sure not to install the last MSE update. Avoid KB2949787. Otherwise you will get the red MSE icon and the warning box every startup. If Windows Update offers updates, do them manually using the customize option. Unchecking an update hides it from later being added. You can update them later by going to the MU site and checking for all updates. Then look at the Hidden Updates to restore them.

MSE can still be updated in the application so far. I don’t know if there may be other KB updates sent, but MSE will supposedly still be updated with new definitions which may also be done manually.

FYI, PC Pitstop does not make any changes to your system…it simply reports what it finds and offers suggestions on how to fix what is wrong.

If you haven’t already done so, check the Windows Event Logs on your machine and see what it has been logging…

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

That is usually the best first place to start when you begin having issues, and will often tell you what is wrong.

      Good luck!

I finally went back and ran PC Pitstop’s Driver Detector and system check: This time IE ran it instead of griping about anything to download or run.

Basically it found a defragmented file, a few memory hogs like Google Update and some files that would require me to BUY something to remove. No sense in running it as shareware because it doesn’t do anything…

I found the site to look junky and it had money written all over it! Thankfully all of the drivers were up to date. So far this adventure has been FREE!

    • #1457791

Susan Bradley has KB2862330 on hold, people are saying bad things about it, you should try removing it. If it doesn’t help, you can always reinstall it.

Given the date of that patch for the Win 7 machine (Oct 2013), while it could be responsible, I would have thought that the USB problems would have manifested before now.

As for the XP machine’s constant running chkdsk on start up, have you read this MS article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831426 or the 3rd Post by tyagiankit in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/16be9a3c-2aa4-4844-879f-b3b626e03586/chkdsk-running-on-every-boot which also fixed this for a XP user.

I update XP every month. A simple registry hack makes your computer available for updates, that apply to your system, for another 5 years.
      Open notepad

      Copy and paste the folowing:

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMWPAPosReady]

      “Installed”=dword:00000001

      Save in any convenient location.
Change extension of notepad file from .txt to .reg
Icon will change into a registry entry.
      Double click file, or merge.
Run Microsoft Update and you it will install “pos”
      restart and update.

Ok XP has expired but that has probably nothing to do with it . Troubleshoot this computer like any other version of windows , If you go to system restore and choose various dates will it show you something that drastically changed that you could backup from? If not run process explorer or ccs ( comero”s autorun . If any processes look strange right click on it and check it out on line. How is msconfig anything weird there, In control panel are all the drivers ok . In add remove programs anything strange in the list. Regular troubleshooting should find an answer don’t get looked up in the fact that its XP Good luck Bob

Well I decided to put the old hard drive back into the Dell and so far it is working well. Acronis complains about the drive’s health, but I don’t believe it after if found nothing wrong with the drive AFTER I installed a cloned WD drive. I had them both connected to do the cloning. When I restarted the PC, Acronis said everything was OK.

I used Wise Registry Cleaner to check it and fix a lot of errors found. It has a restore option too! It could not fix them all. If there are any other problems I will post back.

    • #1459243

Speaking of Updates, my old hard drive needed them, but I did not install the LAST MSE Update. That is the one that gives us the red box Warning that XP has expired.

I just do a Custom Install to make sure I’m getting the right updates that I may need.

So far the old hard drive has worked fine for 6 days without a reboot.

    • #1459344

Found a problem today with the Acronis Drive Monitor. When I clicked the taskbar icon to see the results the machine immediately went into a Memory Dump.

It did this twice. After the second try, I decided to remove Acronis all together! I swear that is a program made to sell new hard drives one way or the other.
What else could explain my old drive testing good after I installed a new WD one?

      • #1459818

Ran my old hard drive for a week 24 hours a day and it got kinda slow so I rebooted and everything worked fine!

I’m thinking that the Acronis Drive Monitor was actually scheduling a Check Disk on reboot and may have cause the Memory Dumps too!

Microsoft Security Essentials without the last Update from Windows Update installed can still be updated through the MSE program itself. The icon stays green and there is no End of XP Service Warning.

    • #1459847

You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24

Don’t be put off by the network installation nomenclature. The download contains SP 3 for all versions of XP. Note the requirements state that you need SP1 and SP2 installed first.

You should also be able to get it via Windows Update
