I keep getting this message: “Your device is missing important security and quality fixes.”

This is on my Dell Inspiron 17″ Model 5770 Laptop

    Windows Specifications are:

Windows 10 Pro Version 1909 OS Build 18363.1500 Installed on 7/24/2020

From looking at the update history, it seems that these 2 updates did not install

    Microsoft – Printer – 6/22/2006 12:00:00AM – 6.1.7233.1 (131)

Last failed install attempt on 5/16/21 – Ox80240017

Security Intelligence Update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus – KB2267602 (Version 1.339.73.0) (2)

Last failed install attempt on 5/6/2021

Version 1.337.684.0 was previously successfully installed on 5/4/2021

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated

The first is a generic printer driver, dated 2006. The other is just a definition update for Microsoft Defender Antivirus. The latest definition at the time of writing is version 1.339.867.0. As for getting the latest definition updates, see this page.

I highly doubt either are considered “important”; and the latter is really only significant if you are only using Microsoft Defender Antivirus and not a third party AV program.

I am only using Defender & no other AV program.

Latest Definition update today was 1.339.901.0 & was successfully installed.  I rechecked for updates & that is still the most current definition.

So, I guess I do not need that old Definition Update 1.339.73.0 (2) ?  What is the (2)?

All printers operating correctly – so I also do not need that old generic driver.

Update keeps trying to update those 2 previously failed updates.  How do I stop it from trying to update those?

To be clear, the old Defender definition update is still being displayed in the main WU menu? If not, then where is it?

As for getting rid of the unwanted and unnecessary updates, I would say the simplest solution is to use wushowhide (an official Microsoft tool) and hide the two errant updates.

When you run it, click on Advanced in the bottom left and be sure to uncheck Apply repairs automatically.

When WU next scans for updates, they should disappear. It is odd though, that an older Defender definition update has not disappeared on its own in the wake of more recent definition updates.

Anyway, hope this will resolve the annoyance 🙂

No, they both appear only in the History

But, when I check for updates, they both very briefly show up & try to install but never do install.

I think I saw the same message “Your device is missing important security and quality fixes.” on a PC yesterday. The PC was up to date with updates, including the May security updates but was running Windows 10 Pro Version 1909 (same as your PC). I thought that the message might be due to the fact that Version 1909 has now gone end of life.

Was already thinking of upgrading from 1909 to something else

But now I feel I need to resolve this problem before ever attempting an upgrade

          I would suggest the following:

          1. Make an image of your PC (in case you need to go back to it).
          2. Upgrade from 1909 to 20H2.

It is quite likely that this will resolve your problem.

            Why not 21H1?

How do I force it to update to 20H2 or 21H1?

When I check for updates, it never offers me anything above 1909

Use TVR (in GPEdit or registry entries) to set Windows 10 to desired release.

21H1 has only just been released so there hasn’t been much time to fix any bugs.

20H2 has been out for long enough to be more reliable.

I assumed that since you were still on 1909 you were probably more interested in stability than being on the bleeding edge.

When you upgrade to 20H2 (or 21H1 if you are feeling brave) the logic that determines what updates are required will take a fresh view so hopefully the update problem you had will just go away (the update history will probably be reset).

The fact that you are on the Pro version of Windows is helpful when controlling what version of Windows you want to upgrade to. There are various ways to specify the Target Release Version – see AKB2000016: Guide for Windows Update Settings for Windows 10 referenced in the link from Alex5723.

Is there a separate “compatibility” test to determine whether my laptop is capable of handling the 20H2 update?

Would it make any sense to use the Download Assistant @  Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com) which I believe does a compatibility test before installing the 20H2 update?

… wushowhide (an official Microsoft tool)

Not any more. Microsoft has removed the tool.

      • #2365734

wushowhide is still available for download from sites like OlderGeeks and MajorGeeks.

wushowhide is still fully functional as it’s always been. It is NOT buggy.

Microsoft HAS NOT disabled wushowhide or removed/blocked it’s use.

I use it all the time and there is NOTHING WRONG with wushowhide.
