AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2010 at 6:40 am #1224269I do not recommend a purchased anti-virus program. There are many free programs
that are very good. My personal favorite is Avira AntiVir Personal. However,
there are several others that are very good. To name a few:Avira AntiVir Personal: http://www.free-av.com/
Avast! Free Antivirus: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
AVG Free: http://free.avg.com/ww-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free
Check out this site: http://www.freebyte.com/antivirus/
Both McAfee and Norton’s are over priced and bloated. They tend to interfere
with other programs. Evey time I fix a computer for others I always install
Avia. I also install SpyBot-Search & Destroy along with Ad-Block. I have never
bought an anti-virus program! And never had a virus related computer crash. -

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2010 at 10:29 am #1224306I naturally despise having to have antivirus software running on my computer in the first place, let alone in the background. To me it is a necessary evil.
MSE does quite nicely for me as it is lowkey, simple, and absolutely functional. One of the few security features that Microsoft has ever endeavored to get right IMO. -

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2010 at 4:57 pm #1224352I have had MSE for four months and like how it runs, small and fast.No problems so far. However,on May 6,2010,Fred says ‘MSE automatically disables any versions of Defender it finds on a PC’.
windowssecrets.com/2010/05/06/01-The-120-day-Microsoft-security-suite-test-drive
My Defender install is behaving like nothing has changed, asks for updates, auto run,etc..Guess i’m curious if Fred was mis informed or is my system faulting somehow. The only thing i have onboard that may affect these is Windows Steady State.
previously I had Avast, but was a bit disappointed at the bloat in v4.
Thanks -

AskWoody LoungerMay 19, 2010 at 8:44 pm #1224526MSE has both an AV component and an antimalware component. I’m wondering if what you are interpreting is actually MSE’s AM component since MSE does automatically disable Defender.
Sorry,no. I still have an independent Defender which still requests it’s own updates, runs scans on schedule,& reminds me to scan;Completely independent of the MSE.
When i installed MSE,I had already removed Avast, per instructions, but left Defender on and running in the background.
I have both running, and working ok,and understand all of Fred’s May 6 article. Thanks -

Thanks,Think I’ll keep it due to the handy ‘Software Explorers’ feature, easier to use than the one inside TweakNow WinSecret

Not solely by themselves. You would need an antivirus program as well, as the above listed programs are for spyware and malware.
I’ve used them both and they are decent tools for their respective uses.
Any popular free, known workable AV program for Windows 7, will due until you can form an opinion and make a more informed decision.WSsilas

AskWoody_MVPMay 20, 2010 at 3:38 pm #1224782Getting back on-topic, I like that Microsoft is finally taking responsibility for their own security issues. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the built-in Windows Firewall is probably sufficient, and combined with MSE, you would be safe enough for most purposes. I would add a third-party interface for the outbound Windows Firewall controls, and maybe PC Tools Threatfire for advanced heuristics. UAC aslo serves a proactive defense purpose, once you get used to how it works. For second-opinion scans, Super Antispyware and Malwarebytes will soon have Native 64-bit scanning engines, so those are also excellent choices, but not necessary for first-line active defenses. Staying up to date with Secunia PSI is also a security measure, as is cleaning up your system with Glary Utilities (CCleaner does not yet do 64-bit Windows very well). And using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer might provide a bit more security as well.
JUST MY OPINIONS — DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH !

AskWoody LoungerMay 22, 2010 at 8:29 am #1225161I love Avast. It updates itself. It stops a virus found when going onto a site that is infected. And you don’t have to do anything to manage the removal. I have tried MSE when it first came out. I found it to slow down my PC. Slightly. I keep a very slim XP. Actually I am anal about it. After an uninstall and registry removal, I still do a search for leftover files and delete them.

AskWoody LoungerApril 9, 2011 at 10:46 am #1275077At office: Avast (month ago we used Kaspersky but it really slowed down things…)
At home: ZenOK Free Antivirus (Windows 7) and none (Ubuntu)
Although I have a paid subscription with ZenOK I agree with those who do not use an antivir programm at all, when you know what you are doing. I am surfing the web with javascript disabled and I do not download files from untrustworthy sources.

AskWoody PlusJune 6, 2010 at 4:51 pm #1227389My favorite anti-virus software is ESET NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/home/nod32-antivirus); is has a very low demand on a computer’s resources. The June 2010 Consumer Reports magazine reviews and rates anti-virus software. Also, the following two organizations do rigorous and scientific evaluations of anti-virus software: http://www.av-comparatives.org and http://www.av-test.org

MemberJune 6, 2010 at 5:36 pm #1227396I’ve been quite happy with Vipre Premium. Easy to use and seems to protect well.
Anyone having different experience?
I’ve been using Sunbelt Software products under several names, the latest being Vipre Premium. I have had no problems with viri, rootkits or malware. It runs very secretively (no slow downs, etc) and the price, depending on the time of day or something, seems quite reasonable.
I am very happy with VIPRE. Have used Sunbelt Software products for several years beginning with CounterSpy. I like the Unlimited home site license. Sign up for email newsletter. They often run reduced pricing deals.
Comparison chart….
Just in case you have an infected system. They also offer a useful Vipre Rescue program for an infected system ….

Would Malwarebytes’ Anit Malware and SuperAntiSpyware suffice for Windows 7 security?
ArmstrongArmstrong,
Hello… Lots of choices …lots of opinions… Me… i use no “MS” anything (security patches or updates) I run Malwarebytes PRO, and Norton internet security 2011 (on several OS’s Vista and “7” 32 and 64) With Norton you can “adjust” and configure it however you want… not a one size fits none as some. Remember.. In life you get what you pay for …. with the only possible exception being intelligence. Regards FredPS: My personal experience with “Super Anti Spyware” … About a year or so ago (posted a comment about it ) i tried it (downloaded from FileHippo) and after a day or so i began getting “pop ups” saying that “Super” had found something or another ,think it said a Trojan or Hijack …something to that effect … and they could eliminate it for a “Today Only Special price blah blah” So…everyone ..what do we call a program that does that (or at least use to ) Oh! that’s right…… “Scam-ware” I know many at the “lounge” use and like “Super” But… “Fool me once shame on me …Blah blah blah”

AskWoody LoungerMarch 21, 2011 at 9:28 am #1272791In my life as System Admin, I have gotten free license keys for Kasperky. I’ve become a big fan of it since and will be paying for it when the license expires. Short of that, for the PCs that Kasperky doesn’t cover I use MSE. I find MSE to be low resource. I use it on our two netbooks.

AskWoody LoungerMay 7, 2011 at 1:22 pm #1278539I used PCTools program, it work well. Then I got an e-mail that my subscription was about to expire, so I renewed. A couple of months, a new e-mail about the subscription was about the expire. That time I looked in my records and found they were in error and had been on hte previous e-mail. I asked for a refund and was told it was too late. Then they sent me another e-mail telling me my subscrition was about to expire. A good program, just no ethics.
I have used AVG with good results.
I have used Webroot with good results until last week when my desk top froze. I could not access Webroot, I could not load Webroot from the disc. I lost use of my desktop for a week while it was in the shop. They found 1273 items of malware that they used Malwarebytes Anti-malware and then Combofix to remove another 20 items. Webroot failed me and I am not smart enought to tell Webroots automated system why I am upset or even that I am upset. And of course, the phone support is only available during working hours when I am working.
Time to change service providers again. Too bad it is so difficult to find a real person at any of the software or hardware companies.
